    Hi all

With everything else going on I forgot to mention that my ducks started laying last week. Being 5 to 7 years of age they are slowing down a little and now start to lay later and stop laying earlier. They are all in good health so that's all that matters and not the amount of eggs we get. Although my hubby did get a bit impatient eagerly awaiting his first supper of duck eggs and homemade chips that he had for his supper last night :)

How is everyone and their hens and ducks now the weather has started to get a bit better. Had a little rain here this morning but now the sun is starting to wake up. Nice to be able to see the hens dust bathing in their larger dust bathing bed instead of in their coop in their much smaller one. Mind you I really do not think they cared at all about being cramped in their makeshift one at all. I would often see around 10 of them at a time having a dust flinging match between them.:rotfl:

I must sort out some more pictures of them to post on here.

The recent sunshine is most appreciated here.
The new layout of the run for mine seems to be working much better, and we're enjoying having them out and about in the garden more often.

CAFCGirl bet your girls are having a great time now they have more space. It is surprising what they get used to though if their space is smaller. For most hens it is the fresh air they love and sunbathing especially if they are rescue girls that have never seen or felt the sun on their little feathered bodies before. More space is a bonus for them so well done to you.

Hubby is digging over the veg beds this week and the hens and ducks are dying to get in there. We fence it off over the summer when our veggies are growing and open it up for them over the winter months. So for the minute they are locked out again only until the beds are dug over and they are allowed back in there when the compost bins have been emptied on to the dug over soil. Then we leave the hens and duck to spread the compost over the veg beds for us over a couple of weeks. It's certainly a way of getting them to earn their keep:rotfl:

Just a thought has anyone heard from oldandhappy? She was posting in here quite a bit and has recently disappeared and not posted at all. I loved her posts as she had some great stories and some lovely photos to show us. I do miss her on here.

Hope everyone is ok and enjoying the warmer weather. Think it is pretty good every where around the UK at the moment.

All three OMG  I have a broody hen but at least it is only one of them. My broody hen of the past 3 years is no longer with us so another hen has taken over. I collected the eggs at lunchtime today and she was sitting on all 6 of them. When I was trying to collect them she kept trying to peck me and I kept say "no don't you dare" but she still kept doing it. Mmmm!!! Think this one needs a bit of training. The other one never ever pecked when you collected the eggs but she used to just screech at us really loudly. Oh well they all have their own personalities. I can foresee some more pecking tomorrow :D

Hope everyone is ok and there hens too.

    Hi everyone

Hope everyone and their hens are doing great. Mine are doing really well now they are running about like loonies and enjoying themselves.

Sorry I have not been posting at all but my hubby has had a serious accident with his arm. He had to have emergency surgery after being taken to Royall Free hospital in London. Surgery all complete, stitched, bandaged up and home again thankfully. I was there when it happened and it was so scary. Looks like we saved his arm by putting a tourniquet around it to stop the blood. Thank god we did that eh?. Having just had surgery myself and now a nasty ear infection following the surgery I am struggling a bit to be honest keeping up with everything. But, I say to myself we will manage and as long as we are ok and the girls are fed and clean the rest can be left for another day.

Will catch up with you all when I can. I am reading about every other day when have the time.

  • Hi all, hugs to Edwink and husband.

Sounds so frightening, I hope your both resting and recoperating well.

Me and mine are well. Hubby and I decided to paint our coop over the weekend. It was looking a bit shabby after four years and I actually wanted a new one originally. But when I started looking I couldn't find one which opened the way ours does at the moment, none of them looked as solid or as roomy as our one. And in true MSE style we already had the paint so we had no excuse! By the end of the weekend we were both covered in blue and white paint and the chickens weren't talking to us and we weren't talking to each other! Might've been simpler to buy a new one, however it's done now and looks sparkling!
Anyways hope everyone is well. x
