  • Seems like you're making good progress Belle! :j I'm getting the same feeling as you about payday now, looking forward to seeing how much debt I can take care of each month. It's nice to be back in control! :)

That might be my favourite part! :D

    Well done on the £50

  • That little pink blob is exactly what I looked like after transferring the pennies! :p

Today was a spendy one but not wasteful. Had an intern leaving our team at work so although I'm not drinking got some drinks in for others, sorted a pressie and card, etc.

I remember trying to live on an intern salary so don't begrudge these costs and they were shared with team members.

Must plan better for next year though as hadn't put anything aside and like Christmas the intern swap happens at the same time each year!

Hoping to have a nice, cheap weekend. FIVE DAYS UNTIL PAYDAY! :j
  • Sometimes you wake up, look at the numbers, and think: I'm not getting anywhere. Or: If I couldn't ever save that amount then how am I going to pay it off.

My family don't know the kind of debt I'm in and also assume I have savings. I know I shouldn't feel down about what I've done before and should focus on what I'm doing now. It's hard when you feel like you're not the person they think you are.

There other thing is that my parents lent me money for further education (once I was already in full time employment and already had my MA) with the caveat that it had to be paid back. £3250. I paid £700 then had to buy a new computer and was told I could take a break until I was able to pay again.

And we've just never talked about it again. I want to pay it back though and show how much I appreciate their support and trust.

It would be great to pay it back in a lump sum but I wouldn't be able to do that for a long time. I think I'll call my dad and let him know I'll start making smaller payments but will increase next year.

Sigh. This paying off debts malarkey is tough.

Just found out I need to buy a notebook for a drawing class I signed up to. Going to pop to the high street as I'm sure I'll find something reasonable.

I wish my work paid overtime! That would be a great money spinner. I'd get a second job but I don't think I could cope without downtime away from people, I'm an introvert and I get so stressed if I can't have a chunk of alone time!
  • I'm not in a job that pays overtime either which is a real pain in the bum, but you're right - you can't sacrifice your own health, you have to have some time for yourself.
Try not to get too down, there are bad days and good days. I have had a good and positive week, but I expect I'll be feeling down again once I've paid the vet.
Chin up, your parents will understand x

Hi Belle, I know how you feel, with the exception of 2k my parents lent me last year they think I have no other debt and savings too. It's so difficult, I don't want to lie to anyone but equally I know how disappointed they would be if I told them what the situation really was. At least if you repay them a small amount each month it will take some of the pressure off.

My work don't pay overtime either and I'm an introvert too, so I looked for a zero hours job where I have the flexibility to say no when I want or need to. I'm not sure if that's an option for you but I find it works really well for me.
  • Thanks CCL and LCC - your posts cheered me up this morning!

I called my dad and let him know I'd be paying the money into his bank account again and that next year I'd be able to up the payments. Didn't mention anything else and he said "no rush".

Feel much better now, I couldn't have just taken the money as that's not what we agreed and I wouldn't want to "trick" them into just letting me keep it!

Zero hours is a great idea. Not sure if I'm up for that level of MSE just yet, but even thinking about these things is progress to where I was a few months ago.

Well done on making the step to start paying your parents back. We still owe my inlaws a little for when we needed a new car (ours died when ds was 2 months old  ). Theyre not in any rush, have paid one chunk off, waiting to save to pay another chunk off now. Other than that, no one knows that we owe any money to anyone. On the outside we look like things are going pretty ok. We both work (dh full time, me almost full time), have a mortgage, etc. It makes me wonder how many people we know that are in similar situations?! I bet there are a few!

My parents lent us £3k to help us move as we didn't have enough equity in our house and were stuck on an interest only mortgage. I paid £500 off as soon as I could then felt guilty that I still owed them so much so I took out an overdraft for £2000. They are happy to have the last £500 back when
Ever but I want rid of it as soon as possible. I hate owing them money.

    Then I'll tackle the overdraft....
19/8/19 vs now Current Total debt £14,188 Savings £2757
    Overdraft £1600 vs £1050
    HSBC1 £1900 vs £3868
    HSBC2 £4100 vs £3730
    Virgin 1 £3050 vs £2800
House stuff and improvements £4460 Virgin 2 £2740

It seems like there's quite a few of us in a similar situation !
