Buying a car as a learner?
Comments
-
Yeah the £400 learner insurance on a KA was only £1800 after she passed, not £2000.
Ive been given some hot tips to try for young drivers but not tried them yet to see if they are just made up figures, i will post back after i decide which neighbour is going to get hundreds of insurance quotes through the door :ACensorship Reigns Supreme in Troll City...0 -
That's wonderful, glad you can afford a new one.0

I'm currently learning to drive, I hope it will take me about 3-6 months.
I've found what seems to be a very good value secondhand car and just wondered what the situation with buying one as a learner is?
It would be on the drive until I pass. Would I need learner insurance, or to make a SORN?
Thanks.
Unless it's such a good deal* that you can't wait 6 months to buy one (which will be in December, when cars sell cheaper) I'd just hang on until you pass and then buy one. For the same money you'll get a 6 month newer car that probably hasn't spent those 6 months on a driveway.
*Like a family member is upgrading from a reliable car you like and giving you it for the trade-in price0 -

i wouldnt buy just yet like others said it could take longer than you think meanwhile youre paying out for something unless youre going to practise in it
dont forget to ask though how much it will go up by when u passWhat goes around-comes around0 -
If you're in a position to buy a car, insure it and have it just sitting there .... while you wait X months to pass your test .... have you considered booking a week off work and going away to one of those intense courses where you come away with your licence?
Then you can buy a car knowing you've passed, rather than buying one now and having it mocking you each day as you walk past it to the bus stop.0 -

Apart from depreciation which may or not be an issue, it doesn't do a car much good to be sat around not being used.
Brakes could seize, oil won't be much good and battery will probably go dead. Probably a better option to buy once you pass if you intend to leave it unused till then.Remember the saying: if it looks too good to be true it almost certainly is.0 -

The problem with intensive courses are that the success rate is much much lower than regular lessons (weekly/monthly etc).0 -
I'd say there is absolutely NO point in buying the car now. The second hand car market is huge and changing all the time, especially with the cars you should be looking at when you pass (cheap & crap; don't consider anything else until you've gained some experience). It's just not necessary to move on 'bargains' with such dispatch in that market.
You cannot be certain how long it will take to pass your test. The average pass rate is sub 40%; some people go for months on end without passing largely due to just bad luck.0 -
Except that you massively increase your chances of passing by having a car to practice in.0
