Is it too late to plant courgettes and tomatoes?

I've been busy moving house, and haven't managed to do as much in the garden as I had hoped this year. I have planted up a few pots with herbs, but no more than that.

Is it too late in the year to plant some tomatoes and courgettes? I'm in the south, and the garden gets lots of sun.

From seed .?..........my toms were sown in March
courgettes? again late, last month would be better.

I would go with sourcing some small plants

Courgette plants grow rapidly so should still give a decent crop if planted now ..

Tomatoes, if you can find decent large plants and can provide them with warmth and protection into the autumn, you may get a crop, but it's a bit late really.

Salad crops like leaves, radishes and cress might be your best bet.

Not seed, I would use plants.

I've already got lettuce which I planted about a week ago, and it's doing really well.

    I hate radishes and cress!

How about spring onions? Is it too late for these? I would have to grow these from seed (no greenhouse).

Put a Wanted post on Freecycle, explaining that you've just moved etc. It's surprising what spare plants people have.

You can definitely plant spring onions now

I would also give the courgettes a go. Nothing to lose.

I always sow too many courgettes in the mistaken anticipation that they won't all germinate so after planting the ones that I require I am left with six or seven plants going to waste, if you ask around someone may have a plant or two going spare.

I'd chat up the local allotment holders for spare plants.
