Maple syrup
The OH has a hungering for pancakes topped with bacon drizzled in maple syrup just as Frankie and Benny's serve for breakfast for £5 each. The pancakes are easy...but the maple syrup is harder to find...cheaply!!!
I've found 100% pure maple syrup 500ml for £9...£9 is quite a lot. How long does 500ml last? I would have thought maybe 25ml per pancake so if were to make 6 pancakes from a packet between us for £1.50 for the cost of the pancake mix the maple syrup would also cost £1.50. Then the bacon rashers are 14 for £2.20. There's 2 per pancake...and I'll just put the 7th one on top.
This is getting quite expensive at £5.20. £2.60 each. I think I'll be better off finding a half price voucher and physically go to Frankie and Benny's.
So...does anyone know how I could cut the cost of this down or should I just give in and go to Frankie's? I know if I go there then there's an additional cost for a coffee/tea or whatever drink we'll have which usually isn't discounted by any voucher....if I can find one better than the 20% off one that I've got now.

Does it have to be 100% pure maple syrup? We have Clarks Original Maple Syrup from Tesco. It's £4.99 for 500ml so quite a bit cheaper than the pure stuff you've found. I can't taste the difference between that and whatever they serve in F&B's/Giraffe.0

Maple syrup is expensive, but it is delicious. I suspect that most restaurants don't use the pure syrup so you could probably get away with a blended one, which will be a lot cheaper. Or you could buy the pure stuff, and use less (although that is hard )
Also, you could save a bit more by not buying pancake mix - it's really just overpriced flour and additives in a fancy packet. Buying basics flour, salt, eggs and milk would be a little more expensive initally but you'd be able to make loads more pancakes for £1.50, which would bring the cost per portion down.0 -

I tried Clarks 30% maple syrup and I have to say that I think it is not a patch on proper maple syrup unfortunately.I’m a Senior Forum Ambassador and I support the Forum Team on Competitions Time, Shopping & Freebies boards, Employment, Jobseeking & Training boards If you need any help on these boards, do let me know. Costco sell maple syrup in a large bottle from memory it is about £10 we've had it several times as my family love American pancakes.
Costco also do a big American pancake/waffle mix which goes well with the syrup.
The maple syrup works out much cheaper than the expensive supermarket branded version.0 -
http://www.amazon.co.uk/Kirkland-Signature-Canadian-Maple-Syrup/dp/B002NSG0R4 they have this on Amazon - not sure what its like though, but as a traveller to Canada before, if you're going to have it, you might as well use the good stuff. I doubt very much F&B use 100% pure Canadian Maple syrup.Feb 2015 NSD Challenge 8/12JAN NSD 11/16

Aldi have 250ml maple syrup for 3.99. (or it may be Lidl) - while stocks last.
Do not compromise - do not go for adulterated ms. Otherwise Asda has cheapish ms.0 -
I picked up 250ml of Maple Syrup from Lidl a couple of hours ago for £2.99.
Never had the stuff but that pancake, bacon, maple syrup combo is exactly what I have planned for my first breakfast tomorrow. Thanks to the magic of baking powder I only recently figured out how to make fluffy pancakes, as opposed to the usual crepe I make.
edit: I wanted to check exactly what I'd bought and it's "McEnnedy" (I have spelt that exactly like it's on the glass bottle and it is the brand Lidl use for their American themed products. I have never met a McEnnedy in my life but I may not be getting out enough) Grade A Canadian Amber, the only ingredient listed is Grade A Maple Syrup.0 -
But you don't want Grade A. You'd be as well just using Golden Syrup than that. Grade B is the better stuff for flavour. Or even Grade C.0

I have used the Aldee one and its fine , not on pancakes with bacon I just find the combo a bit odd, but drizzled over just an ordinary pancake minus bacon is nice and also I like it mixed in with some plain vanilla ice cream and a dash of cinnamon0
