I am bowing out of this debate now as the song and dance some people make about having to provide proof of ID to FD is just getting too ridiculous, and I'd only repeat what I already posted.

Just a couple of final remarks on grumbler's last response:

Not really. Their cash ISA is still the best around for big amount and instant access
it doesn't offer the best AER for instant access cash ISAs, not even for larger amounts

Regardless, being able to leave doesn't mean that I cannot have my opinion on their state of mind and express it publicly.

You are of course entitled to your opinion, as is everyone else. I find your assessment of FD in this matter nothing short of utterly ridiculous.

Who offers the best rate then?

    I stand corrected :o.
I thought it still was 2% on £40K+ at FD, not 1.5%.

I have to say that when FD asked me to get my ID certified by a solicitor, they insisted that HSBC branches were not an option.

So I went downstairs and walked in a random direction for 5 minutes and found one. The receptionist pointed to a photocopier and said to photocopy my passport. I then gave her the photocopy and she stamped it using a stamp which had the solicitor's name and signature on it and took my fiver.

    This was accepted by FD.

Can the poster who mentioned Videolink please try that option?

I am intrigued as to what it would entail.

Are they expecting you to show them your passport on camera, or just look at you to see if you look "a bit dodgy"?

Did you get your fiver back from FD?

I really don't think FD want to ask for all this ID. I'm sure they are completely aware how infuriating it will be to long standing customers that they now have to (re)show ID to continue banking with them.

They're doing it because there is the threat of fines and prosecution for non-compliance with regulation. Whether it was their fault for not taking good copies of it previously is another matter, but it isn't really in FD's hands now. If they don't have legible proof of ID and address on file, they are required to ask for it.

Can you point me in the direction of the legislation that says they must do this retrospectively - i.e. for accounts opened before the ludicrous money laundering requirements were imposed by the government.

Think about it - it would be pretty naive/stupid/irresponsible not to check the completeness of ID for existing accounts.

By co-incidence, the Independent reported yesterday that the London is now the global money-laundering centre for the drug trade. In the light of such news, it isn't exactly surprising that thousands of innocent people will be screened. Just in the same way that millions of innocent people have to take their shoes off every day when checking in for flights. Extra checks are really annoying, but you should blame the real culprits for any inconvenience, not those that help protect you from the culprits.
