Leaving aside the question as to whether or not her employers are obeying all the laws about minimum wage and hours (I suspect they are not, but that is not what you were asking), what is important is that she has a visa that allows her to work in the UK, and a contract of employment here. So it is likely that officials of any EU country would give her a tourist visa.

I suggest you check the requirements for a visa for Spain when someone else (not the person who needs the visa) is paying for the holiday, and see if she can get the various pieces of paper together. If that is difficult, remember that while the Spanish visa authorities have a reputation for being difficult, Austria is good at answering questions and is quite likely to be helpful.
  • thanks for your reply. There is quite a list of things needed to apply for the Spain visa, i will help her go through everything and ensure she has all the right things. If there is anything we are not sure about i can phone up for help but I'm hoping its all self explanatory. :)

Don't expect the Spanish embassy to give you any sensible answers, even if they condescend to answer the telephone! You might get help with the details on the forum at ImmigrationBoards.

I can't comment on the rest of this thread, but just to respond to Voyager's point about nanny's income:
    1. "Nanny" is not a protected title; it if often used by untrained people who help families out in many different ways (not commenting on OP's gf, just generally). Many privately employed "nannies" have minimal or no qualifications.

    2. Child care professionals with a NVQ3 equivalent or degree qualification, working in the public sector or in well established settings will earn a reasonable salary (though rarely on a par with say, social workers or nurses). In private homes only a few will earn good money (but they are the ones people hear about!)
