They will only dissapear off your credit files - nothing stopping anybody holding internal information for their own use after this time.
Why waste time with a bank that you have defaulted on?
Look at it this way, you lend a mate £500 - he doesn't pay you back - would you then lend him more money 5 years down the line?

Yes i understand that, but im just applying for a basic account which pretty much anyone even undischarged bankrupts are entitled to, there's no risk ie overdraft or loan etc

Guess i'll try HSBC for one of their basic accounts then as they're not linked to halifax or barclays in any way.

Quote me the law that states you have a legal right to have a bank account?
There isn't one - the banks certainly have had their arms twisted with having to open basic accounts to customers that would not otherwise have a bank account but if you owe them money there is no way they will do so.
You are right to try a bank with whom you have no financial association.

You are right there isn't one at the moment, but the European Parliament’s Payment Accounts Directive creates a right to a basic bank account, which must be enshrined in national law across Europe by September 2016.

Not sure this helps the OP though, as something appears to be seriously wrong on their credit file. A CIFAS marker, perhaps?

    No, no cifas markers.

Maybe just a load of old closed/settlled accounts and a couple of defaults with the halifax.
