It happened on Saturda and now it's Tuesday. If they were going to pay the money back why have they not it before now?

Why did they take the money on the forst place?

Accidents happen. I don't understand why this little 'story' part is included. Would have been far more interesting if you had told us about the fork which fell on the floor, or how the bar worker underfilled your pint by an inch or two.... It is all pretty much pointless in the whole grand scheme of the meal!*

*unless they promised to pay money to rectify the shoes issue, which wouldn't have happened. Can't see how a bit of ketchup on your shoe can equate to a free meal but hey ho, people are strange!

then when they went to pay she refunded them the money instead of charging them.

So the restaurant PAID THEM the cost of the meal? That means that they have GAINED MONEY for a free meal!! They therefore owe two lots of money! At the very best they owe one lot of money if the mean was free.

They did stay in the bar part of the restaurant & had more drinks after

In which time it would be likely that everyone would be too busy to notice the error. I'm also assuming blind innocence in regards to not checking the receipt after paying.
They have now had the restaurant ring them, had their contact details from the booking, they we're extremely rude & demanded the money back, making out my mate hadn't paid

So the restaurant is down one lot of meal AND the full cost of it, and they were "extremely rude" when they tried to get the money back?! How shocking!

As a side note but how would you feel if you were in their shoes with an ebay sale (for example)? You send the item out only to notice that you have lost both the item AND you have been charged instead of receiving payment!

Being "extremely rude" (which is subjective) is a normal response in this situation.
They were going to give the money back but because of the rude call they received they are reluctant to as it isn't their fault the waitress made the mistake & the restaurants attitude was awful

    Where do they stand?

So, this "mate" of yours is allowed to punish someone for having an awful attitude (and a harmless accident) by not paying back money which is owed?

That has some huge implications right there!

What was the ketchup? It has to be Heinz.

If the restaurant agreed to compensate for the damage to the shoes at an amount that by coincidence happened to be exactly twice the price of the meal then they're rotters and you/'your mate' can ignore them.

    Yeah, right.

OP, just t clarify, are you saying that your mate paid and then was accidentally given a refund, in effect paying nothing for his meal, or did they actually get the price of the meal credited to his account?

The OP needs to tread carefully here...
