I personally think as tyres always tend to lose a little pressure over time putting in a few extra PSI is a good idea as when you come to do them again the pressure will be lower, but will be a little higher than it would have been otherwise.

Thanks for help on here. it doesn't seem to be cut and dried, and it looks like they were probably inflated more than the 37 if we allow for a little deflation.

I opted for the Firestone, so fairly medium range as against the real cheap ones. one mechanic said it really didn't matter for safety which brand I chose, but the other recommended I went higher than the cheapest (I try to mse in other areas), then they disagreed which ones to have back or front, so i guess there's room for difference of opinion!

FWIW, I tend to over-inflate my tyres a little - about 2psi or so over the recommended pressure. I do carry a fair bit about, with a lot of motorway mileage
If you lend someone a tenner and never see them again, it was probably worth it.

A wheeled motor vehicle or trailer fitted with a pneumatic tyre shall not be used on a road, if ... the tyre is not so inflated as to make it fit for the use to which the vehicle is being put

In fairness, I was talking of a few PSI over the recommended figure, as specified by the OP. As I'm sure you'll agree, that figure is only a starting point due to different uses of vehicles as I've outlined.

With such a woolly law it is, of course, more difficult to ascertain what may be over or under inflated, but 5 PSI over the recommended figure won't even be close to that undefined limit.
