Banishing boredom

I'd agree with the others who have suggested that you're unhappy and/or depressed.
I can't ever remember being bored. There are so many things that interest me that I can always find something to do.
At the moment I'm sat in the garden with a coffee and the laptop looking out over miles of wonderful countryside. I've watered the tubs and hanging baskets, read a coupe of chapters of the current book.
In a while I shall go down to the workshop and finish spraying some metalwork that I took off the boat yesterday as it needs tidying up before an upcoming two month cruise.
My problem is that sometimes I don't have time to do all the things I want to do, yesterday I didn't play my guitar because I ran out of time.
I've found that life isn't necessarily about goals, it's about contentment and I find myself to be very content.
What came as a huge shock to me was the discovery at 55, after taking early retirement, that a well paid career isn't the be all and end all. That being an expert in your field and part of the corporate machine is only a small part of being alive, as it turns out a very small part.
For two years I've been a nobody, just another human being with no real purpose in life other than to please myself and find what enjoyment I can.
I knew when I finished work that I had interests and that I wouldn't be bored but it came as a massive shock to discover just how happy I was not to be working.
I no longer eat on the run, I sit down at the table, I take my time and enjoy my meals.
I thought I'd miss it all but I don't. Try to find what makes you happy and content and focus on that, it doesn't have to be meaningful or productive, it just needs to make you happy.
I know it sounds trite and easy to say than to do but if you can manage it you'll never be bored again.
Good luck, I hope you find the contentment you deserve. One by one the penguins are slowly stealing my sanity.0 -
Study, for pleasure rather than work, is a good suggestion.
If there's nothing that interests you enough that you want to study it more, then I have no suggestions.Proud member of the wokerati, though I don't eat tofu.Home is where my books are.Solar PV 5.2kWp system, SE facing, >1% shading, installed March 2019.Mortgage free July 20230 -
Book a nice holiday somewhere, away from it all. It'll give you a chance to step back a bit and maybe see what it is you're really wanting from your life.left the forum due to trolling/other nonsense

Following the same routine for a long while will make most people bored. Have you had a holiday recently? A change of scenery and a break from the routine can give you time to review life. It might not be that bad after all!
If life is generally OK then try adding something new. How about a new sport / join an adult learning course / volunteer somewhere.0 -
VfM I feel your pain. I am disabled, and unable to go out anywhere without assistance, so when my DH is at work, I'm effectively housebound. The only time this changes is if I have dogs staying (I'm a host for a dog-sitting service) when I go out on the mobility buggy for their walks.
I am currently between guests, and climbing the walls! (Figuratively speaking, before someone makes the obvious remark about how does a cripple climb walls).:D
Due to my physical limitations, housework takes me an extremely long time to do, and that is pretty much what I fill my days with, just popping onto MSE when I need to take a rest.If your dog thinks you're the best, don't seek a second opinion.;)0 -
Vfm, i agree with what many others are suggesting about depression. Like you I too felt unfulfilled in my life though on paper it looked great, I've taken nine months off work to travel and will be continuing to work on my mindfulness to appreciate the little things etc on my return.
Lamewolf, (sorry to distract from the thread). If you take the dogs out when you are dog sitting are you not able to go out on the mobility scooter for a non dog walk when you are not dog sitting? iyswim

Unfortunately, no. Firstly, I don't feel safe without a dog with me; and secondly, there's nowhere other than the dog-walking routes for me to go, I'm out of range of any proper "destination" iyswim, - even if I wasn't scared, I'd feel an idiot trundling round the field on the buggy for no proper reason.oldestgnome wrote: »Lamewolf, (sorry to distract from the thread). Figured there was probably a logical reason

One thing I enjoy doing is challenging myself to do something new each week. On busy weeks it can be something small like watch a movie on Netflix I wouldn't normally choose or buy a fruit I have never tried before. On quieter weeks I might go to a free concert in town or just go somewhere I have never been before. I have done some quite random things like go to evensong at my local cathedral even though I am not religious. I really feel it keeps my brain ticking over and makes me realise how much interesting stuff is in the world. I have also met a couple of ladies online who are doing similar things so there is also the fun of sharing our pictures and ideas for future things we can do.0
