    This could create problems in work for your friend. If you value the friendship at more than £80, then I'd bite the bullet and pay what they're asking.

    If there was no friend involved then I'd be looking at an LBA then small claims.

    The police will not be remotely interested in a civil dispute. The OP handed the watch over voluntarily.
    If it sticks, force it.
    If it breaks, well it wasn't working right anyway.

    Seriously though, if a friend wasn't involved, I'd be doing exactly as the more legally minded suggest.

    However, as there is a friend involved and I know that, that person values the employment, I will pony up the cash and put it down to experience.
