Take it to a garage that can do a proper diagnostic.

    What colour smoke?

    White, smells very oily though
Even a stopped clock tells the right time twice a day, and for once I'm inclined to believe Withnail is right. We are indeed drifting into the arena of the unwell.

I wonder if it's oil being burnt. Does it not have a blueish hue to it?
I've heard of garages not cleaning out the intercooler or exhaust properly after oil seals fail in the turbo and similar symptoms with the oily smelling smoke.

White... you mean light grey i'm betting?
Oil seal in turbo failed spitting it out exhaust. I'm betting you have splashes of oil on the rear bumper and oil level has dropped...........

yes light grey.its a strange one as it happens after a fairly long run,ie more than 20 mins and starts to become noticable when stopping at traffic lights then gets worse thereafter.no warning lights on dash, car drives fine

Yep sounds like turbo from what you've written. Take it for proper diagnosis. Even disconnecting part of exhaust could help diagnose it. Piston rings can be diagnosed with a wet and dry compression check..
