What an invaluable insight. Equally, those who find threads not of interest to them can of course simply ignore them. I think you will find it is the principle rather than the penny that the OP at least objected to.

    Just a point of view

Its threads like this that IMHO bring out the worst in the people on MSE.

Not replying to anyone in particular but putting this into perspective you'd need to buy ONE THOUSAND items to get £10 worth of pennies. If anyone feels that its worth getting annoyed and demanding a penny a thousand times to get £10 then I truly feel sorry for you.

I'm going to file this thread in the "GET A LIFE!" box.

My personal thought on the subject.

I invited all points of view Mr_Singleton, so thank you for yours. If we never ask the question, then we'll never know the answer.

But I do find it interesting but more in the way that there are SO may other things in life that are worth getting annoyed about rather than a sodding penny.

Either give the right money or accept that you may or may not get the penny in change. If that really annoys you then vote with your feet and shop elsewhere. If enough people do that then they'll stop it.

How many people will think on there deathbeds thank **** I stood up for my principles and got my penny from that thieving shopkeeper?

BTW There are 2.3 million children in the UK living in poverty. Now thats a worthy thing to get annoyed about.

    Anyway enough on the subject.

I feel, Mr Singleton, that you are making the erroneous assumption that those who want to have the correct change do not care about people in poverty. The two are not mutually exclusive, and a lot of charitable giving happens because people are frugal to make it possible.

I guess if you can spend £1600 on a washing machine you have different priorities. It's interesting though that no one appeared to be rude on the forum to you about your excessive spend on a washing machine. Maybe a little tolerance of differences is required. I accept not everyone has principles, that is also their prerogative.

I once walked 5 miles home from town due to being 1p short of my bus fayre. I was a teenager though and unaware I could have explained my predicament to the bus keeper. Even now if I wanted something and had 1p less than it cost, I'd assume that I couldn't have it, rather than the shop would accept less because '1p doesn't matter'. Why should it be any different the other way round??

It's only a penny to you, but to a shopkeeper it could mount up a lot if they are taking an extra penny from most customers in a day. And if that is extra money in the till, is it declared to the tax man? It doesn't seem likely, which makes the extra penny even more valuable to the shopkeeper.

If I'm due a penny back I'd like to have it, and if I chose to put it in a charity box or throw it away in the street, that's my choice. If the shopkeeper wants to charge me an extra penny, fair enough, make that the advertised price and I can decide whether I want to shop there at those prices or not.

That's just it..if something is marked up at £1.99 and you've offered £2 and they've accepted your offer....If you ask for the change they won't refuse to give it but if you then walk away without asking for the penny they can keep it if they wish. It's not theft.

If something is marked at a certain price and you want to buy it and you take it to the seller you are offering them the price they have marked it at. If you give them more than that it doesn't mean you are offering more, you are expecting to be given the difference. They can't keep it.

The sooner they've been withdrawn and all melted down the better. They did this in Australia, Canada and New Zealand. It does not affect inflation. Prices are still marked at 1.99. The shop asks for 1.99...you could use a debit/credit card and you will pay 1.99 but if you use cash it'll be 2.00. It costs about 1 penny to make a penny coin. It's not making the government anything so let's just get rid and round everything to nearest 5p step.

Rounding to the nearest 5p would be fine, so long as they marked everything down to the nearest 5p.

I'm afraid " let's just round things up" fills me with dread. Look at other things that have been " rounded up" VAT, pension age...:o

If OP pays by card in their shop, sadly they will take the £1.99 not £2 for the item, then a charge for using the card! Maybe the shop should just dispense with .49 and .99 as price points. I can't see that many people will tolerate this type of behaviour for long.

    Bexster:)

M&S used to have everything ending in .99, but they changed a few years ago and it's much better.

Is this the man who is criticising others for saving a penny and claiming that 2.3 million children in the UK are living in poverty (wonder where he plucked that figure from?)! £1600 on a washing machine is ridiculous.
