1 penny change from shops

Imagine if say Tesco's or Sainsburys decided to keep a penny on every bit of cash tendered how much they would make over the period of even a day let alone a week !!!
Yet they'd still want people to do their own checking out at the end. They'll probably want us to stack the shelves for them next!0 -
This is interesting, I've not heard of shops not giving out the right change before, or keeping the odd 1p!
I rarely use the coppers and 5ps that I accumulate in my purse, but I usually save them up, bag them and take them to the bank.left the forum due to trolling/other nonsense

Are you sure? When you take something to the counter to pay for it, you're offering them a certain sum of money, which they accept by taking the money off you, and that forms a contract. If they don't give you the change then they've breached that contract by charging you more than you offered and they accepted. Strictly speaking surely that's theft?
The sooner they've been withdrawn and all melted down the better. They did this in Australia, Canada and New Zealand. It does not affect inflation. Prices are still marked at 1.99. The shop asks for 1.99...you could use a debit/credit card and you will pay 1.99 but if you use cash it'll be 2.00. It costs about 1 penny to make a penny coin. It's not making the government anything so let's just get rid and round everything to nearest 5p step.:footie:Regular savers earn 6% interest (HSBC, First Direct, M&S)
Loans cost 2.9% per year (Nationwide) = FREE money.

I don't know what your other shopping options are but going by the points in your posts that I've bolded, I'd be avoiding all these shops like the plague!
Round our way, shops always give 1p change - even the charity shops - and I've never been charged for using a credit card.
I think that's the trouble, the village is spread out across quite a large area and the corner shops are dotted around for convenience. There's a town 4 miles away for anyone who drives. Most people only use the corner shops if they've run out of basic stuff like milk or bread. Otherwise, they're used more frequently by people who tend to be stuck at home during the daytime, such as the elderly, or full-time mums with infants.0 -
I'm afraid " let's just round things up" fills me with dread. Look at other things that have been " rounded up" VAT, pension age...:o
If OP pays by card in their shop, sadly they will take the £1.99 not £2 for the item, then a charge for using the card! Maybe the shop should just dispense with .49 and .99 as price points. I can't see that many people will tolerate this type of behaviour for long.

A few weeks ago I went to Tesco for a few items and only two of them were in stock. The total came to £1.00, and I had a 99p voucher, so I paid £0.01p.

i would ask for my 1p change as we keep them for my ice cream fundMe, DD1 19, DS 17, DD2 14, Debt Free 04/18, Single Mum since 11/19

I wouldn't want to see coppers axed, as like many on here I keep them, save them up and bank them. It's nice to get that money "back" in effect. On the up

Would they accept £2.00 if you bought a couple of items which came to £2.01? I wouldn't be happy being given a penny short on my change - it might be different in at a market stall where you could haggle a bit, but in a shop in the UK I'd expect the exact change.0

Its threads like this that IMHO bring out the worst in the people on MSE.
Not replying to anyone in particular but putting this into perspective you'd need to buy ONE THOUSAND items to get £10 worth of pennies. If anyone feels that its worth getting annoyed and demanding a penny a thousand times to get £10 then I truly feel sorry for you.
I'm going to file this thread in the "GET A LIFE!" box.
My personal thought on the subject.0
