Actually, that's a very fair point.

I was thinking of old designs (when doors weren't reversible), when the actuator was on the side rather than the top or bottom.

Sorry now wasting my time discussing this with people who have no clue re what is required!!!

You were wasting your time from to outset because all your points have been irrelevant to the case in question.

It might actually be the case that the fridge in question is different to most other appliances where the door fixing side can be easily changed by the consumer, hence the reason why Smeg state that it requires one of their engineers to do the work.
Just because 99% of fridges have a door which can be moved without it affecting how the switch operates doesn't mean that every single fridge made must be the same.

It's not just SMEG. I've been looking at a Samsung fridge, and this thread made me check the manual

    Page 18 says:
Before you reverse the refrigerator door, make sure to unplug the refrigerator. Samsung recommends that reversing of the door opening is only completed by Samsung approved Service providers. This will be on a chargeable basis and at the customers expense.

Any damage caused while attempting to reverse the door opening is not covered under the appliance manufactures warranty. Any repairs requested due to this circumstance will be completed on a chargeable basis at the customers expense.

What an odd complaint form OP.

Yes, perhaps it should have been clearer before purchasing that SMEG must undertake the reversal of the doors at additional cost. But AO have a very good returns policy.

Fridge/freezer delivered, OP unpacks it, checks for damage, reads instructions on how to reverse the doors, doesn't want to pay so calls AO to return the item FoC.

We bought fridge/freezer, hob, double oven & cooker hood all from AO, & opened ALL the cartons to check for damage & to make absolutely sure I liked the look of it all. Read 'how to swap the doors around' & did that to ensure it was indeed 'do-able'. All well within the 14 day returns window

OP needs to look closer to home to apportion 'blame', so does anyone who fails to check their deliveries immediately. If the 'waiting' time while I do that isn't factored in to the delivery drivers schedule I simply write 'Goods Unchecked' before I sign for them.

    Siiimplezzz.
Seen it all, done it all, can't remember most of it.

Can't you get Wren kitchens to rework your kitchen?
