Are you really telling us that you have no alternative to fur to keep warm?
Well this is where "green" and being "animal friendly" doesn't work together. For the majority of people in the western world there are other fabrics that can be used to keep warm,
yes, rayon, nylon, acrylic, faux fur, polar fleece, all from fossil fuels.
So to be ethical in what we wear we must save the bunnies and exploit the oil reserves? Oooops can't do that, it causes carbon emissions!
A lot of the land used to grow cotton in India could be used to grow food instead. There is not enough cotton, hemp and linen to clothe the world. Oh hang on imports, carbon emissions, not exactly eco friendly is it?
I eat meat, why the hell shouldn't I use the skins to keep warm? Why waste it? I can get skins from the local abbatoir if I wish to tan and use myself, why not?
When the oil/coal reserves run out and the nimbys have put a stop to all the wind/solar power projects how will you keep warm?
On the scale of things, the use of oil for clothing and fabrics is waaay down the scale of priorities when it comes to rationing in x number of years time. What's the latest forecast, 20/30 years with the amount that India and China and the Middle East use? (Petrol 20p per litre in Dubai, why do you think the most used vehicle is the Toyota Landcruiser Amazon out there?)

I agree with you that there is no reason to waste it if you are an omnivore.
My personal reasons are that I think wearing fur would encourage the killing of animals purely for fur and it would not be restricted to the by-products from food e.g. mink farming. So for that reason I choose not to but in theory I agree that there is no direct reason not to use the by-products of animals already dead. It is the likelihood of increased killing purely for fur that I would object to.When the oil/coal reserves run out and the nimbys have put a stop to all the wind/solar power projects how will you keep warm?
I agree.
It's a good point to link the green issues with animal rights.
I hadn't seen it that way before (which is the benefit of discussion). It is nobody's place to dictate what others wear or eat whether they choose to wear/eat it or not!
I agree, but there are benefits to disussing it aren't there?
After all you've educated at least one person :-)0 -

I've actually had really interesting debates with people on here who raise and kill their own animals. We've managed to give our opinions like grown ups and have come out of it with respect for each other. I can see this thread isn't about that sort of discussion so I'll leave you to it.The stupid things you do, you regret... if you have any sense, and if you don't regret them, maybe you're stupid. - Katharine Hepburn0

Yup I know people who eat seagull, I also know people who eat fresh roadkill and they have eaten badger. Not to my taste I admit, but I do like a bit of rabbit. The "Bloodlust" Clique - Morally equal to all. Member 10

mink are nasty creatures, did anyone see them on Springwatch destroying a moorhens nest? Another case of animal rights "liberating" them and then them breeding in the UK. (mink are not indigenous)The "Bloodlust" Clique - Morally equal to all. Member 10
