Yes I had heard about rot around the lower part of doors to inns etc.:rotfl:

And you're right about food storage too in pre refrigerator days. Sometimes you can still see the old stone thralls in older kitchens or pantrys.

    Hi everyone,

We're thinking of moving and have been looking at properties online. I've come across a couple that refer to the gardens as being 'Southerly backing' - does this just mean North facing??

I've googled it but can't seem to find a definition.

    Thanks in advance,
    SB

I've been contemplating the original question over the weekend and I think there are 4 possibilities for an answer to the original question:

    1. The garden is walking or driving backwards in a southerly direction. I imagine this involves some sort of unstable hillside.

    2. The garden is moving anticlockwise around the compass points i..e started out to the west but has now moved round to the south / south west. If you thought option 1 was bad this involves a quite terrifyingly unstable hillside.

    3. The garden is an ardent confederate determined to resist those pesky abolitionist northerners to the bitter end.

    4. The idiot estate agent thinks that because the garden is at the back of the house it can't be "facing" and must therefore be "backing". Presumably if it were at the side of the house it would be "easterly siding" in his mind.

All utterly irrelevant really but it's amused me for a while.

    Wonderful......thanks for the laughs......

I must confess I have never heard the expression "southerly backing" before.

I am a northern lass so just assumed it was a daft expression used "darn sarf" .......;)

Nope. I'm a southerner and I'd never heard it before either. From the link in post 6, "southerly backing" gardens mostly seem to be features of houses in Newcastle marketed by Rook Matthews Sayer.

Maybe it's just a Geordie expression then? I'm a Derbyshie lass and we have a lingo all of our own.;)
