but anyone who has used the new android lollipop setup will know how difficult it is to properly manage the plethora of settings

Appreciate that the settings are complicated but it would be one of the first things I did. If you are on a 1GB limit I'd probably set a warning at 750mb and limit at 850mb. Probably over cautious but accounts for any mistakes android makes and leaves a bit available if there is ever an emergency situation where you need data.
Worth noting any time I've checked android usage monitor against my bills it pretty much gets minutes, texts and data bang on.
Doesn't help with the cost but should prevent it happening again in the future. And compared to some on here £52 is a tiny amount.0
