If it takes a supernova explosion (which releases more energy that our sun does in its entire lifetime of 12 billion years) to make gold, then I will assume we wont be making it on demand anytime soon.

Yeah, at the moment you might need to hire CERN for a few thousand years, but once they get the hang of things anytime soon you'll be able to do it by firing some ball bearings at a lump of lead.
