EE charged me £2 a day for 1MB data!

Options
I wanted to share what happened with me with EE recently.

At the beginning of June, I realised that my mobile bills were extremely high. I was on a £8.99 per month sim only contract, yet my bills over the last few months had been as high as £70. I rang up and was told the high bills were for data. I switched to a higher data bundle in a new contract.

I then began to work out why the bills had been so high when I am not a heavy user of data. After several calls, where I was given no helpful information, I got out my contract. One month I had used a tiny amount of data (31mb) over my bundle limit and had been charged around £30. My contract stated that I would be charged £5 for up to 250MB a month. However EE had been charging me an astonishing £2 per day that I was over my limit and where my phone had been using even 1MB of data.

I was told the billing team would look at the bill again and then heard nothing. I rang up a week later and was told the billing team thought the bill was correct. Finally I sent a copy of my contract over to someone who looked at it and called me back. Even she tried to fob me off with only reimbursing me for 3 months. I pointed out that EE were totally in breach of my contract and she reimbursed me £160!!

I have received no apology.

I am disgusted that Orange/EE took £160 out of my account over 5 months with absolutely no authorisation or basis on which to do that. I had to check, recheck and make several phone calls to even establish what had happened. Nowhere on my bill or contract did it say that they are making this £2 a day charge. I was only told that on the phone. I have asked for an explanation as to how EE are levying this charge. Is everyone being charged in this way??

The bills are incomprehensible - it was only because I had the information as to what the data charges SHOULD be that I could compare them with what they were. There was no breakdown of the data charges. Check your bills!!!!!

EE don't allow you to go over your limit. So you perhaps were on a legacy Orange plan. They used to be good...but plunged downhill.
  • This is true, it was an Orange account. But it was a 24 month contract I think, so still live. I'm sure I am not the only person on an Orange account.
  • Orange did start to go downhill towards the end, my sister was charged about 3 quid a week for a subscription service that she'd never used and had never opted into - orange had done it for her. It took about 3 months to get it sorted. I find EE are much better than what Orange used to be.

The key is you went over your limit, out of bundle data is always expensive compared to the in bundle data costs. Even going over by 1 byte would result in a daily charge that can be very disproportionate to the monthly cost.

It would not have been stated on the bill or contract as such but both will refer to the current T&C and Tariffs in force, and they would details the charges.
