Breakdown cover

I have a 15 year old corsa. Since it got to 10 years the rule was that you could in effect not change your cover insurer so I've been with RAC since.

I haven't looked around for some time as I assumed I'd have to stick with RAC and the cost seemed reasonable, about £90 for Premier Rescue. Is this reasonable??

Is this still the case, that I can't look elsewhere for cover?

p.s. I don't want to try a gocompare type thing as I hate all the guff and marketing stuff you get as a result.

Thanks

I've been with greenflag for years but have just swapped my car for a 13year old golf and added my partners 18 years old fiesta on to the policy. It's just come up for renewal and both me and him are covered nationwide for £82 for the year. Each year it goes down, whether I call them out or not.

AutoAid. £41 a year covers you and your spouse in any car. It's a pay & reclaim policy, but I've been with them for years and can't fault them. In fact, the last time I called them out they said they'd settle the bill with the recovery firm directly, so I didn't have to pay & reclaim. Don't know why, perhaps because I've been with them a long time ? But either way, they're always highly recommended on this forum.

    Thanks for those replies.
So was it a 'rule' or did I just misunderstand something when I thought after 10 years old it was essentially impossible to transfer breakdown cover to another company? Or have the rules changed?

    Cheers

Another vote for Auto aid. For a long time now this site has had it as it's top pick

Mine also covers us both on any car and they've been great the several times we've had them out.

I don't think it's a rule, I've certainly never read anything about it - usually a max number of call outs per year but not a max age of vehicle.

another vote for AutoAid. Only had to call them out once, but were very good and the garage who towed me home settled directly with AutoAid so no claim back on that occasion.
GC Jan £431.490/£480.00  £48.51 under budget!

This seems to be the trend now with Autoaid. I notice that EBE_Scrooge in post number 3 said the same thing. A couple of guys in our car owners club also told me that they were not asked to pay.
  • Thumbs up here too for auto aid. Used once for a flat battery, quick and simple, covers the whole family, including my motorbike. Renewal came in at £42, absolute bargain.

My ADAC renewal is cheaper this year due to currency fluctuations. £81 for full European cover for 2 of us. My wife did comment that she had to renew in german but I think that's because my wife didn't ask to do it in English.
