Who should pay for accidental damage by child

All of that fierystormcloud plus varifocals. That was Boots; I'll try specsavers next time but it's the lenses that cost, rather than the frames.

Yup my glasses were £500 two years ago. Worth every penny for what they do for me.

Well that is a LOT imo. My husband also had varifocals some 2-3 years back, and still got 2 pairs for around the £200 mark (and that was Boots at the time.) The one pair was varifocals, not both. The other pair were prescription sunglasses. He never got on with varifocals though, so didn't have them again.

As above ^^^ That is a lot for one pair.

A women at work paid about £700 I think. I'm pretty sure it was something like that (7 rings a bell), because I can remember saying at the time "blimey! That's expensive!" She got them from a local standalone optician rather than a high street chain, so possibly that's a reason why, that and they needed thinned down a lot as she has a really strong prescription.

I'm sure my Mam's glasses have cost about £300-£400 in the past, thinned down, varifocals etc.

As I said, my husband has had everything too; varifocals, thinned down, UV filter, very light, reactolite lenses, the works; never more than £250 for 2 pairs.

So I don't know where the opticians in question are getting the prices from. I suspect some people may be paying far more than they need to.

I'm glad you got it sorted

If I left my glasses on the arm of a sofa and an adult knocked them off and broke them, I'd pay for any repairs or replacement as I was the numpty who left them there. A sofa is for sitting on, sofa arms are for leaning on. If I wanted a shelf I'd buy a shelf! That it was a child who did it doesn't mean anything to me really.

So the situation has been resolved.

So you had an argument about who should pay that was significant enough to have you come and post here for advice before you bothered to look at it closely (and realise that it was really broken) and see if it could be fixed for free? Seems a bit of wasted energy!

I would say pay half each, but the person with the glasses should really look after their glasses better, especially when they have children around.

I am also baffled when people say they pay £500 and upwards for one pair of glasses. So I would ask the following two questions to the people who claim this is what they paid;

Where did you purchase them? (some specialist optician in our local village is not a suitable answer; name of optician please.)

And

What brand are they?

Because frankly, in all the opticians I have been in, even the name brand/fancy frames only go up to a couple of hundred, So even with the extra bits and bobs, it wouldn't be more than £300-£325 tops.

So I struggle to believe anyone who says they paid £500-£700 for one pair of glasses.

And it's funny when people are challenged and asked 'where did you get them from,' or 'where did the person you know who paid £600 for one pair of glasses get them from?' it's always some random optician whose name they can't remember.

I wonder if anyone will ever come up with a name of an optician who charges £500-£700 for one pair of glasses.

Most of the time I keep 1 pair of glasses in a case , my music reading glasses, even though I use them several times a day my other glasses,varifocals, are kept on a highish shelf and never somewhere where they can be knocked off. Even though I think it's very rude to demand the information in this way, I am actually going to respond.


This is a pair of glasses I bought in 2002:


Opticians: Boots
Brand Gucci
Type: metal rimless frame -£360
lens type: super-thinned £30 per lens, £60 in total
protection: anti-scratch, anti-smear, reflection free - £35 per lens, £70 in total


so £360 + £60 + £70 = £490


There were some different versions of the frame I bought but in Sterling Silver which were around £520 and did not include even standard lenses.
