What is the best PAYG network?
Hi,
I have a virgin phone but was wondering if this is the best network to stay with - last year they had various offers on texts and calls but this year there's been none.
We have 4 virgin phones in the house so we get 3p texts to each other but to everyone else it's 10p. Would it be better to switch? 2 of the phones are unlocked so would need to unlock the other 2. Is it worth the hassle?

If you can get the other 2 phones unlocked for free by remote unlocking (some very helpful people on these forums can supply codes for you to try) it is definitely worth it.
There are free sim cards on offer at the moment so you could order upto 4 for free from Vodafone, O2, Tesco Mobile if you want to try network coverage without spending out on sims.
You could have a look at the websites of O2, Vodafone, T-Mobile, Orange, Tesco Mobile and Asda Mobile to check their PAYG tariffs to see what suits your mobile usage.0 -
i moved to PAYG when easymobile set up shop a while back. unfortunately, they went boom not long ago, so they transferred me to fresh mobil (carphonewarehouse) and i'm still on the same tariff...
i pay 15p/min for calls, and 5p per text. which suits me just fine. i spend between £5 and £15 a month on topups
although, i got me a cheap N95 recently, so im looking to find somewhere with an unlimited data tariff. unfortunately, its not looking good for PAYG at the moment. the cheapest all you can eat deal is t-mobile and their £1/day data charges. which means i would be spending approx £40/month.
not good.
why cant they offer web and walk on PAYG for a sensible price? £10/month would be just fine for me, as it would still mean i spend only around £20/month in total, and mean i wouldnt be locked into a nasty 18 month contract (not that i would get a contract with my current credit rating)0 -
Hi Sammy, with Vodafone all four of you would be able to talk to each other for an unlimited amount of time for £5 a month with Vodafone Family (just one person of the four has to pay £5). Also if you spend £2.50 mon-fri you get free texts all weekend, spend £5 get free texts, unlimited calls to vodafone and landlines, and 60 minutes of any network calls at the weekend. You can also talk off peak for 10p a minute to any network, and with stop the clock talk for a whole hour to any network for only 30p.
o2 and orange offer free texts for minimum tops up, starting at 300 texts for a £10 top up, going up to 1000 texts for a £30 top up. I think Orange has the advantage over o2 on this , as their x net calls are only 15p per minute as opposed to O2 35p per minute.
T mobile also offer a text appeal tarriff, where all texts are 3p, however calls are expensive on this tariff (20p landlines and same network, 40p off network I believe). They also do an everyone tarriff where calls are 15 p a minute, texts are 10p.0 -
How about Orange.
15p/min to anyone, anytime. If you all topup £10 a month each, you get 300 free texts. (Must sign up online at www.orange.co.uk/payasyougoreg once you have your sim, and choose Speak Easy with Free Text Trigger). Set each other as your magic numbers and you'll pay 15p an HOUR to call eachother.
Bargain!
NOTE: Investigate deals yourself. This is only my advice, not that of my employer. It may be wrong. Check details.0 -

Unfortunatley you cannot use magic numbers with the Free Text Trigger Promotion. It is one or the other.0 -
To back up richardjames73's post, Vodafone Family has also been very useful for me. More information below
