Halifax lost my cash deposit

I went into the local Halifax yesterday to deposit £300 straight into my account.
I put my Halifax card in their machine and handed over the cash to the cashier.
Got my receipt and left.
I looked at my account a couple of times yesterday and the money hasnt shown up.
I had a close look at my receipt this morning and it is showing a completely different account and sort code to my card.
I have rung the bank and they seem not to be able to help me.
I cannot understand how this mistake could have been made and what I can do about it.
The Halifax have said they will call me back, but its been ages.
And to go all the way back there with young babies is going to be quite difficult to do.
I go on holiday on Friday, which is why I needed this cash in my bank.
Any help please would be fantastic.
How could my card give up someone elses details, their account number and their sort code? It just seems completely ridiculous.
Any advice please.

Call them again and keep calling until they fix it, or go back into the branch receipt in hand and complain about the problem, loudly.

Not much else you can do.

Should be an easy fix for them, when someone actually looks at it. Presumably the cashier didn't properly clear whatever they were previously doing so basically deposited your money to their previous customer's account.
  • Yes, I have called them they really didnt seem to know what to do. They say they will call me back but that was such a long time ago.
One thing the person on the phone said was "prove it"
I am waiting for them to call back.
I can show them the receipt, i can show them the cashier, the desk, etc., however, to go all the way back with twins in tow is not really something I want to do if I dont have to because of their error.

If needed, take a photo of the receipt and e-mail it.

How about offering to email a copy of the receipt when you next call - explain how difficult it is to visit
  • Thanks nic_c and grumbler, good idea.
Funny when something happens you just dont think of the most obvious things to do.
On to complaints department now to see if they can help, still no call back from the local branch after three hours - they did say 30 mins max

The problem with the Halifax is that they cannot fix things or do many things over the phone or online since the Lloyds takeover .
I have given up on them because every single thing it's "Go into a branch".
  • Thanks everyone, I eventually got through to someone, they have sorted it out over the phone, to say the cashier is in trouble is a slight understatement. They have put my money back in my account.
The cashier is now under supervision.
I got £20 extra in my account for the time and trouble.
Although I do hope this comes from the cashiers coffers not the Halifax.
Thanks again for all you help

Have you ever heard of human error? Or have you never made a mistake in your life?

No need to take sick joy in someone else's pain. You have been inconvenienced for a couple of days and havnt actually lost anything, in fact you gained £20 from the error. That should be enough.

Why would you hope the cashier would have to directly pay the £20 for a simple mistake?

Well, I'm glad you have got it sorted out.

But the cashier appears to have made a genuine mistake, so I think you are overstating that the cashier is 'in trouble'.

The cashier may receive some coaching to help them with their performance, but they are not going to be punished, and they won't have to pay the Halifax back the £20!

Contrary to popular belief, banks are decent employers and they don't operate a climate of fear where employees are terrified to make a mistake.

I assume you have never made a mistake at work, as you seem to have a very unforgiving attitude.

  • Yes, people makes mistakes, we all do, however, I needed the cash in my bank today, not in another persons bank. So when it was drawn to the attention of the bank I expected them to do the right thing and sort it out without inconveniencing me, no matter how long that was for in my day
You dont know my situation, you dont know if i needed that cash to buy food for my kids, so dont assume that I should not be pretty angry when my cash goes missing in my bank and the bank doesnt want to act to help. And fobs me off
    Yes we do make mistakes.
    Yes we do!
