Pesky company routing calls through a local number- legal?

A few minutes ago, I had a funny one.
It was a normal looking number (014 something) and my 'hello' met by silence, but just before I pressed the 'off' button, a little voice said 'Goodbye'.
That happened to me just once, but it was quite some time ago. (Over a year ago.)
I suspect that it's a call centre which uses pre-dialling but one where they've programmed it to insert the 'goodbye' before it cuts off, when no operator is available. If it is, they are certainly not persistent. There are two types of people in the world: Those that can extrapolate information.0 -
Just goes to show how much contempt they have for their potential customers when the very first part of their campaign is built on a lie. They have made my landline useless, may they all spend eternity being called by selfish marketers as karma.0

It's perfectly legal and actually most companies use this technology anyway. I could setup a VOIP account online in about 30 seconds and get a "local" number that appeared to be a landline but was really just a bit of software running on my computer.0

Google "PPI callback".
Enter the callers number and make up fake details.
The lower down Googles search results the more disreputable the PPI company will be and more likely to sell their data on....The man without a signature.0 -

This isn't strictly true.
I could run a perfectly legitimate PPI company (if such a thing exists!) yet have incredibly bad SEO or just a shocking website thus Google will list me lower.
Lower does not mean less reputable.0 -
