Pesky company routing calls through a local number- legal?

Options
I am after some advice, we are being bombarded with calls asking for a Mr Smith or Mrs Bird from numerous telephone numbers. Despite me explaining there is no-one here of that name, please remove our number, the calls keep coming (either that or they slam the phone down before I can respond).

Lately though, they have been routing their call through numerous local numbers like this- 01*** 652798. When I call the number ee have given me to bar last calls, it comes up with this number- 0113 419 9918. In essence, I think they are routing their calls though a local number- is this possible or even legal?

I suppose it lulls the occupant into a false sense of security thinking someone local is calling, so they pick up. Anyone had expereince of this or advice about what to do next? we are ex-directory, with tps also.

thanks in advance.

It's as easy to do as any other number.

Unfortunately the caller ID/line ID system has a number of gaping holes in it that were deliberately left because the designers recognised a need for a "spoofed" outgoing number for legitimate uses, and IIRC it's a standard feature of many commercial/industrial phone systems.

Unfortunately the scammers, marketers and all round ***** have taken that ability and thoroughly abused it to hide the their real numbers and try to fool people.

Sounds like a certain credit card co, with name like a lorry puzzle.. (need to be vague, don't want to get into trouble!).

name and shame the caller's number, on facebook etc!

So let me get this right...

On the one hand you do not want to name the company, but on the other hand you are inciting others to do just that.

    Have I got that right?

I've been having trouble with my hearing these last couple of weeks, i could hardly hear i thing. It's Ok now but it gave me an idea, when i've had calls these last few weeks all i've done is keep repeating that i was deaf and couldn't hear them and they'd need to write or email. If they asked my email i'd say again, i can't hear i'm deaf, i don't know what you're saying.
So even though i'm better now i'm carrying on do the same thing, they soon get fed up and go away.

A few minutes ago, I had a funny one.

It was a normal looking number (014 something) and my 'hello' met by silence, but just before I pressed the 'off' button, a little voice said 'Goodbye'.

It is a survey company, I dont know their name. It is always indian people calling me. I did go through the survey once, ages ago, as I was sick of the calls and I thought they would p*ss off. They didnt.

The calls have reduced since using the call barring thing from ee, just a bit rich that they are routing it through a number local to me! I'l try the 'I am deaf' thing, but get the feeling they will slam the phone down regardless as they do when I say 'no sorry, theres no....*phone down*.
