Yes and no. In device cameras are so much better these days that they could replace a compact for many users, and lets fact it we all have a camera phone on us all the time. They'll not replace a decent camera anytime soon, but can easily be as good as compact that a few years old. If all you want is images for Facebook or a blog they are fine, and having them in device is better, and if you want photo sized prints they are OK, but larger printed they start to look worse, and of course they need a good amount of light to give good images.
There is the old adage that the best camera is the one you have on you.
Which did a review a back in 2014. http://www.which.co.uk/technology/photography/reviews-ns/cameras-vs-phones---which-take-the-best-everyday-pictures/
Tablets as camera devices are pretty common, walk around any tourist place and you'll see loads of them, I'm not sure theres a higher risk with a tablet than any other device, in fact, given most tablets and phones now can be deactivated remotely so they need the apple/google password to be factory reset its probably better stealing a camera than a phone.0 -
gjchester Many thanks for your input. I have found that the iPad Air2 takes really clear pics of the scene that it sees and outstanding pics of close up objects. It certainly has its place in my opinion.
What the iPad will not do of course is to focus on an object like you can with a SLR camera, but for me I am delighted with both items and it was my concern that carrying around the iPad felt rather insecure taking pics, but it is correct that an iPad can be deactivated remotely and need as you say an Apple/Google password to be factory reset.
Kind regards to all that have replied to my post and I appreciate all the comments.0 -
Bertie...How about this from Amazon?

It has a handstrap on the back so you could hold it like a shield and then operate the camera with your other hand.0 -

Your choice finding looks to be a perfect addition for me and it would give me the confidence to hold the iPad securely and give me a free hand to operate the camera controls freely.
Many thanks for your research.

It will by touching the screen, its by no means a comprehensive as a SLR but is pretty capable as a camera, and there are some 3rd party apps that unlock more controllability.
I think people are so used to tablets no-one would be that bothered, they are no longer must have gadgets, more a commodity. I'm not saying Apples are not priced at the high end, its just most people have a tablet these days but they are not that unusual as a camera, but I understand your concern.0
