  • I have just signed the e-petition following the link from this site and was gobsmacked to see that there are only some 68,000+ signatures with only a week to go to the deadline. With Martin's bulletin received by over 1 millioin users, why on earth are there not more signed up to this??? SURELY we all want to beat the banks, don't we?

My son had an account with First Direct and, while I have little sympathy for his overspending, he has been severely clobbered by their outrageous charges for the past year. Thankfully he has finally managed to escape their clutches (thanks to good old mum as usual helping him while his meagre weekly salary from his first job cleared the debt) but each time a statement landed on the mat, there were charges for this, that and everything. We are going to try to reclaim, but I urge anyone with an ounce of sense to sign the petition - it can only be for everyone's benefit ultimately. I know you can argue that people shouldn't live beyond their means, I certainly advocate that myself, but this particular account just allowed withdrawals to take place over and above the set limit, clearly (in my view) to levy the charges.

C'mon everyone, support Martin's brilliant work by signing up!
  • Thanx for this, ive double checked my allow list and i should be able to receive the email. Im going to try to sign again!
  • Ive tried to sign this petition many times and Im not receiving the email to confirm my signature!!?? Ive emailed the Downing Street webmaster and am still waiting for a reply.....
  • come on all of you that havent gotten around to signing it only takes a couple of minutes.show them that we have had enough of being ignored.
  • hi

I support the idea of a charter but cannot support a £5 charge. the whole point is legally they cannot fine us for breaching a contract. Any break with this legal principle is only going to muddy the waters and play into the banks hands.

Chelsea Mortgage charges & cashback £5000/£672. complaints with banks pending OFT Halifax £30, A&L £35. TOTALS £11,325/£5482
  • Im still not getting the email from the Downing Street site to be able to confirm my signature on the petition. Perhaps this is why there aren't as many signatures as there should be!? Ive given up trying now. I even emailed the webmaster at the Downing Street site to report the problem and have had no reply.
  • There is definately a problem with the online Downing Street petition!! Ive been trying to sign it for 2 weeks with no success. Tonight I signed one of the other petitions to see if it would work and it did! I got the confirmation email straight away and my name appeared on the list but I STILL CANT SIGN MARTINS PETITION!! What is going on???????
