As my cashback contract with Orange/TMO is currently coming to an end, I am thinking of leaving Orange (but still sticking with TMO) and head for T-Mobile.
However, I was wondering whether there are any rules that I should follow regarding
(a) cancellation of my contract with Orange - more specifically, do I need to give them a notice before leaving? Do I need to cancel the account first?
(b) regarding porting my phone number from Orange to T-Mobile.

Basically, your contract with the networks and your contract with TMO are two separate contracts with two separate sets of requirements.
For Orange, you give them the month's notice and get your PAC. done.
About two weeks or so before you're Orange contract ends (so two weeks after giving notice or two weeks before the end of the 12 months) you take out your T-Mobile contract with TMO. Be careful that on some contracts there is a delay in stocking hte handsets for TMO at the moment, if your order is still awaiting stock after three days I'd phone them on their 01xxx number and change the handset rather than risk expiring the PAC through delay.
You get your T-Mobile SIM, call 150, go through to accounts and give them the PAC. It'll take 10 days approx for the number to be ported.
During this time you wait for your final Orange bill and send that off for your final Orange cashback. You've got four months (or whatever) before your T-Mobile bills are due to be sent in.
Hope this helps.

If you are within the last month of your Orange agreement, you should request your PAC code from them. They will still charge 30 days notice.
Once your PAC has been received call TMobile Number Portability team on 0870 6060139 or Customer Services 150 from the TMobile phone.
Advise them that you wish to port your number from Orange onto your existing TMob nr and give them Orange Number and Pac Code.
It will take 5 working days to transfer.
Orange will then send a final bill, once disconnected with any monies due/owed including the 30 days notice period.0 -
which 1 comes first though... Ordering from TMO (I'm going for the D900) or look for the PAC from Orange. Links are a man's best friends.com0

From The Mobile Outlet's site under 'Number ports'Porting to 3, Orange, and T-Mobile
To port to 3, T-Mobile or Orange you need to order your phone first. Once you have received your new phone simply dial 3 customer services from your handset (free call) who will take your porting details.
They only mention 3, but it seems like the same goes for Orange and T-Mobile. :AWell life is harsh, hug me don't reject me.0 -
The porting occurs directly with T-Mobile.
So on the first day of your 12th month you phone Orange and get the PAC, keep it safe.
Two weeks later order the new contract/phone and as soon as you get it call T-Mobile on 150 Option 2 then option 4 and give them the PAC.
Oh and you'll love T-Mobile, the flexibility you have with them is great, not to mention the very friendly and chatty Customer Services.
