Beware the Evans Halshaw "Move Me Closer" deal

Evans Halshaw have a deal where they will move a car that you wish to view from branch to branch. What is not mentioned on the website is that you have to pay £200 that will be refunded if you decide not to buy the car. We decided not to buy and have waited nearly a month for our £200 to be refunded.

The full story is a bit complicated though this in no way explains this delay. Coincidentally, there had been fraudulent transactions on my credit card between paying the £200 and viewing the car and so the card had been reissued with a different number. The salesman explained that they could not refund to a new card but assured us that this was not a problem and he would arrange for a cheque to be sent immediately. This was nearly a month ago and no cheque has been received.

I have telephoned the salesman concerned several times. Each time we are told that he cannot understand what has happened and that he will ensure that a cheque is issued immediately.

Has anyone else had a problem with this so called service?

  • You have to pay £200 for them to move a car for you to view? And people do this? Why?

    Ring ring:

    EH: Hello, Evans Halshaw
PM: Can I speak with <salesman> please?
    EH: Hello, <salesman> here
PM: Hello, this is ProfMonk. We still don't have the cheque. Let's cut to the chase. I'll be at your showroom on <date> at <time> and I'll pick up the cheque in person. If this doesn't happen then I'll raise a Section 75 claim / Chargeback claim (delete as applicable) against my card provider. This will end up costing EH more as you'll lose the £200 AND the card transaction fee.

    :)

Check with your card issuer if EH can refund to the old card number.
  • In the end I wrote a letter to the Chief Executive Pendragon plc (holding company for EH) and copied to the manager at York EH. I mentioned this post. Hey presto - cheque arrived by return. One for the internet I think.

The car I want to view is 362 miles away. They are moving it closer for me. Thats my reason.

But...They will only move down to Leicester which is 120 miles away from me. I rang to ask why it cannot be moved to my closest EH dealer just 23 miles away, they told me that was not the scheme, can only move up to 200 miles. I pointed out to say this not stated in their T&C but was told that was how the deal works. An excellent deal but very frustrating for me albeit round trip mileage reduced by 400 miles.
    Be aware.

It's not a very good deal at all. From a money saving perspective I could drive the 724 mile round trip for £83.93 of fuel and still have enough money left for a night in a decent hotel or two nights in a cheaper hotel. So you could have a weekend away and still view the car and spend less than the £200 they are charging.

So you pay them £200 to move it which you only get back if you don't buy? What happens if you do? The car is already £200 dearer or am I missing something?:(

Some people value their time and paying £200 for a service to save a few quid isn't really a consideration. I personally would rather pay that than spend £150 ish on a couple nights in a cheap hotel where a car garage happened to be...

money saving is different things to different people. To some it's spending barely anything because their income is low. To some it's getting the best deal on a 60 inch TV because why spend £3k when you can shop around and get it for 2k

If you decide not to show up to view the vehicle, they pocket the £200. (According to another recent thread here).

Unless you've already paid, I'd tell them to "do one" and look elsewhere.
