Housing benefit calculated wrong?

Hi all,

Has anybody ever had experience with the council calculating there entitlement wrong?

I have today received a calculation breakdown for my housing benefit claim and it appears incorrect.

Below are the details.

Per week.

Rent..... 103.59

Wages ...159.55

Tax credits.... 164.00

Child benefit 20.70
child benefit 13.70

Total income used in calculator 347.73

Applicable amount for housing benefit 266.10

Total amount payable is 50.53 per week.

To me it appears they haven't applied any of the disregards to our income ie

Couple 10
working tax 17.10
child benefit 20.7
child benefit 13.70

Anybody more knowledgeable care to take a stab at what's gone wrong?

Cheers

Which council as each calculates its HB/CTxB individually?

Do you have any savings, capital or other income?

Have you tried to do the calculation using entitledto benefit calculator?

For someone to do a calculation they'll need more information on your circumstances.

    Hi,

    It's dude council.

We are 2 adults 2 children. Wife working 24 hrs per week earning 690 per month. Tax credits are 164 per week.

I think that the council hasn't applied the correct disregards but I'm unsure how to check.

    Cheers

    Hi,

So I've been on the calculator and it says I should get 86 per week hb plus 16 per week ctr.

The council say 53 hb no ctr.

    How do I challenge this?

The simplest thing is to ring them and ask them to explain.

You are entitled to appeal the decision - is 'how to do it?' on your award letter? There is probably a time limit.

You could google your local council - Dude is not showing as a council, by the way.

    An example:

    Applicable amount:-

    Couple £114.85
    Child £66.90
    Child £66.90
    Family Premium £17.45

    Total £266.10

With the income you have declared you would get a higher amount of Housing Benefit than the amount you have stated you receive. The computer system used should automatically disregard income.

In this post you talk about your student bursary:- https://forums.moneysavingexpert.com/discussion/5261509

Here you list what you receive:- https://forums.moneysavingexpert.com/discussion/5249869

    Child care grant
    parental learner allowance
    maintenance grant
    adult dependants grant
    Maintenance loan.

Student income is taken into account as income with some disregards. So what are the amounts of student income you receive?

This is probably why your benefit is being cut because of your student income.
These are my own views and you should seek advice from your local Benefits Department or CAB.
