Small wedding cake sourcing (North London)

Hi all,
Does anyone have any recommendations for an MSE-ish cake option in North London? (no, there's no chance of my family or friends making one unfortunately). It's a small reception, not more than 50 people, and the only quote I have so far is £260 (for a 2-tier chocolate cake for 50). It's a drop in the ocean of the rest of the costs, but at the moment I'm feeling like it's a bridge too far.
Do I have much hope of getting something significantly cheaper than that? I hope?
Thanks for any help

Have you looked at Marks and Spencer? More pricy than Costco, but they have some beautiful cakes, and there's a good few styles to choose from. There's 4 pages of cakes.

You might get something cheaper if you don't mention the 'W' word lol ... I used to work as a baker/confectioner and even at London prices £260 is an awful lot of money for a two tier chocolate cake. I'd second the Costco option or, if you wanted a fruit cake then M&S cakes are very, very good, and are often on special offer. Failing that try asking a bakery for just an iced cake, don't mention weddings because that immediately pushes the price up because the baker will assume that you're going to want a lot of fancy sugar work etc. Or, try searching localy for a smaller independent place - if you live near a sugarcraft shop they often advertise there or they'd be able to suggest someone.0

Hi Bruno, congrats!
I second the M&S fruit cake. We had three teirs for our wedding, starting from the largest size up. Not only was the cake delicious, it was also really practical for us as we were getting married in Scotland and needed to safely transport each teir safely in their boxes! We hired a beautiful cake stand and bought sugar crafted flowers from a specialist cake shop for decoration.

Of course you could go for something really different and have fairy cakes for all the guests....and you could have coloured icing to match your colours.2014 Target;

How about Waitrose. They do a three tier wedding cake for £160 and looks much more expensive.
I can vouch for their cakes they are yum0 -

If you really want a wedding cake, then the idea of M&S or any supermarket iced but plain celebration cakes is fine. You can also buy icing flowers/decorations etc to put on them to match your colours.

Also, if you don't want to buy the icing flowers, you could use real ones on top - I did this for a friends cake and they looked lovely.:staradmin:starmod: beware of geeks bearing .gifs...:starmod::staradmin:starmod: Whoever said "nothing is impossible" obviously never tried to nail jelly to a tree :starmod:0

when a friend got married they had a mountain of profiteroles and nobody complained,another idea is if you buy a plain cake from the shop you can match your flowers by putting a small posy on top of the cake,good luck0

Hiya
I've just been to my friends wedding and all the guests were asked to bring their own cakes, these ranged from home made efforts such as our chocolate crispy cakes, to fairy cakes and shop brought ones - all in all 7 tiers of cakes - which looked amazing - she got her auntie to lay up the cakes and her usher's wife collected the cakes in a variety of boxes at the church - it was a great success and the finished article looked amazing and everyone felt sooo involved - so for a free wedding cake would suggest this - I wish I'd have thought of it myself! - if you need convincing I can post you a link of a pic
thanks and good luck - sonnie:jWaddle you do eh?0
