Hello MSE!

New member here, although I've been aware of the forums and Martin for a while.
So, yes my title also contains my questions.

I have read through some of the older threads on Three Retention deals using the search function. Does anyone else have any more information though or is the well really bone dry?

Next question, simply what is the Three Network retention number? Anyone know?

Lastly, I haven't had a chance to google yet but what is Hutchison 3G's policy on tethering?
I'm hoping they allow it.

Three have virtually stopped all retention deals, it's a new current price plan as shown on the network or your PAC to leave.

All current plans allow tethering up to a maximum of 4GB per month (depending on allowance).

Say if I go PAYG with the £15 all you can eat data add-on, and tether with this. What actually happens to your services if you go beyond that 4GB limit?

    Do they:

Subject you connection to a variation in speed? Like Vectone mobile do down to 64kbs once you go over their 3gb limit?

Or, do 3 (Three) simply stop, and disconnect your services all together?

What do you think can anyone tell me?

The reason I put it to you like this is that, Tethering as a subject I still see as something of grey area because not many know it exists therefore I feel you can still get away with a lot within reason.

For instance, I originally purchased my iPhone 5 through a third party with EE. It was a really good online exclusive deal for £26 per month with 500 minutes, Unlimited texts and Unlimited data (3G only).

As a student when I was moved to halls with no wifi, I did some research and began tethering and it was brilliant and surprisingly fast! I observed in EE's T&C's that they indeed supported tethering anyway and apparently at an unlimited capacity.

The thing is though, I've tethered with other networks before whom do have limits and some don't even allow tethering but I've done with no problems. After further research and what I'm trying to say is, with the tools used to tether, such as PDAnet for Android and what I use, TetherME (Jailbroken iOS cydia app). The networks can't always tell when your tethering, in fact in my experience they can't, aren't bothered or if they really want to it's a lot of work and investigation to do so.

This is my point. I think and hope with the evolution of 4G that eventually we see more and more deals, bundles and add-on's with unlimited usage and no tethering restrictions, it could and should be the future, whether it ever comes to fruition like that.... well.

PAYG on Three doesn't include tethering, it's only available on their contract SIMs.

From Three's PAYG terms and conditions:
"When using data, tethering a phone to a laptop for internet use, using the SIM in a Mobile Broadband Device or using hotspot functionality is not included."

In a dream world - In reality the opposite is happening due to 4g being used as a home broadband replacement. Three are in the middle of a programme to remove unlimited tethering for all their customers and no other provider offers unlimited tethering.

In addition Android has been copying Apple allows the networks to have more control over tethering, while there are work arounds currently I don't think it will be long before Google and the carriers have it locked down.
