i've just received this email from them, should i accept?
Good afternoon Mr C****

Thank you for your email, I’m sorry to hear that you’ve experienced some trouble with your account. I tried to call you today to discuss it but unfortunately there was no answer.

I’ve taken a look through the account and can see that we’ve previously closed the account back to the date it was opened, voiding all charges, and had the default removed from your credit file. As this was done on 20 April 2015 the default should no longer be showing on your credit file. Due to data protection laws I’m unable to check your credit file for you to confirm, however you can order your 'statutory report' for £2 - please see details on the credit reference agencies websites, Equifax, Experian and Callcredit.

The account at the above address was in your partners name only, and when you both moved to Flat * our records show she completed the process online as you mentioned. Shortly after that the managing agent wrote to us to advise of a change of tenant. I’m afraid the letter was misinterpreted as it wasn’t very clear who was moving in and out. As your name wasn’t on the original account along with your partner, the agent who responded to that letter opened an account up in your name, assuming you were the new tenant. While I appreciate that doesn’t reverse the mistake, I hope you can understand how and why it’s happened.

You mentioned an email that you’d sent previously, but I haven’t any record of this which explains why you haven’t had a reply – I’m sorry about this. As it turned out, with a little investigation we were able to close the account and void the charges without the proof that you’d been asked to send in.
I understand that the goodwill gesture of £20 was not accepted, and I would like to increase this offer to £100. Please know that we don’t have a compensation policy, each case is dealt with individually, however £100 is in line with cases of a similar nature.
Please let me know if you would like the £100 refunding to you or adding to your partners’ account at Flat *, **** Ya*** **** Road. If you chose the latter, please confirm your partners’ name.
I look forward to hearing from you, and if you have any further questions please don’t hesitate to get in touch with me on..........
Any thoughts?0 -
Any thoughts? - a comprehensive explanation and a generous offer!0

Did you tell them about this: "Because of this i have also been declined for a credit card and even car finance. " If you suffered any significant quantifiable loss then it might be worth rejecting their miserable offer again. To be honest, I'd give it a try. I guess there were no quantifiable losses, but see how far they'll go. At this point you've nothing to lose.
And remember the major learning point: never furnish water companies with previous address, DoB and the like.0 -
I tend to concur with Ginger Bob. You could probably squeeze a bit more out of them.
There does seem to be a data breach, and not too distant in character to the one example I posted, and if it were me I would mention the breach and that I would be likely to win in court. I would suggest they up their offer to £350, but be prepared to take £200.
I think it's extremely unlikely that they won't make a slightly better offer.0 -
Thanks for advice everyone.
i've decided to go for a little bit more and have replied to their email.
i will let you know the outcome.
once again though, thank you to everyone for their advice.0
