is this a possible way to text international mobiles abroad and vice versa?

i've been thinking.

on my uk mobile phone package i get 400 free UK texts a month. i text an australian mobile around 5 to 15 times on a daily basis, so i dish out a lot of £'s. i wonder. if i sent the gorgeous aussiebabe a UK pay as you go SIM, would i be able to text that sim card for free longterm, even though its in australia? If not, would sending a monthly SIM card work better? ;)

also... if she did the same, and sent me an australian SIM card, would she be able to text me in england from her aussie mobile phone for aussie prices?

obviously both SIM's will be used for just receiving texts.

thanks heaps for any replies.

Nick

Nick, it sounds like a useful idea, as long as you check that the incoming roaming texts are free; I believe they are, but I'm not a text fiend. If you each ask the relevant customer services, that should do it.

It might even be worth looking for the network with the cheapest texts to its own network and getting one each. Are Virgin 3p each, or Easymob something like that (Easy could be a time-limited offer though). Can you each do that at both ends? You're gonna end up with 2 or 3 phones!

Roaming text messages are normally free.

Should work fine. If you send her a cheapo UK PAYG SIM and she has an unlocked phone which will accept it (or you send her a phone with the card), she will not have to pay to receive and you will only pay the Uk rate. it is the only international bargain with mobiles !

    Hi

In theory you have come up with a really good idea, as far as I know you don't get charged for receiving texts while roaming abroad with a UK sim, you need to see if this is the same for an Australian sim in the UK. You also need to check the fine details as to whether the network/sim you are going to send has a roaming agreement in Australia, I think all the networks probably have.
to find out more info about roaming network agreements take a look at http://www.gsmworld.com/roaming/gsminfo/cou_gb.shtml

As mentioned earlier you will have to carry around two phones and remember not to reply to texts on the phone you have just received it on!! as this will cost a lot more. good luck.

Let us know how you get on when you test this out.

I have text messages from my bank & footie scores etc. so took my Virgin mobile when in Australia. Texts were free to receive & Australia is one of the countries where Virgin allow PAYG customers to roam.

I would keep the swipe card and post the SIM so you can top-up here. They have a 400 texts for £10 deal at present so you could knock yourself out for the first month for a tenner....

Can't vouch for the Aussie side. I bought a SIM when I was there but it had an expiry date and they just cancelled it for non usage.
