I have been charged several times for a long text. This has been happening for the last couple of months at least. Admittedly some may say £2 isn't much but to be honest it is on top of my SIMO. I haven't changed my phone settings Samsung Galaxy S3 so at a loss as to why this is happening. I don't use smiley's in the texts either.

I have spoken to VF abroad - somewhere - and they've said do this, do that etc etc. all to no avail. I am getting quite cross with not being able to get this sorted.

If the VF Rep is available could he please explain why this is happening please and how to sort it. Thank you.

    How long?

Text = SMS = Short Messaging Service

Typically, 'Short' = '160 characters max'

In your phone messaging app settings you can probably find an option to automatically split longer messages into really short ones.
Failing that, try being less verbose.

    Also,
Beware texting sad or smiley faces - you could pay £100s- Money Saving Expert

"Speaking to Vodafone" = "wasting your time".

VF reps are here for plugging the holes in their failed CS, not for providing technical support.

Thanks grumbler but my maximum character is set at 120 and has been ever since I've had the phone.

I don't put smiley's in my texts as well aware by reading on MSE of extra charges.

Sometimes VF reps can be quite helpful :-/. Worth asking because they may offer advice whereas the "overseas" people clearly don't
    understand.

A problem with Samsung phones and S/ MMS .

f you didn’t attach pictures to your message then the culprit are the emojis. Once you insert an emoji to your SMS, the phone will automatically convert it into MMS. To prevent that, don’t use emojis.

The stock messaging app isn't very good and doesn't provide many options, such as the ability to prevent SMS being converted to MMS. I would recommend changing your messaging app to something like Handcent. I've used this app for years now and has specific options to prevent the SMS/MMS conversion.

The OP says they didn't use smiley's though

I don't use smiley's etc Egan, as said above. I only use smileys when using What's App. I keep my text messages brief or actually ring the person if a long message needs to be said.

Thanks Tony. I'm not sure how to change my messaging app so will look into that. I suspect it's like What's App. I'd use that permanently but not everyone has it on their phone or has a phone where they can download it.

    I appreciate your help.

No - it's just a straight forward replacement for the stock messaging app. Other people don't need to have it for you to use it. (although it does also have a built in "whatsapp" type of proprietary messaging too - but I've never used that)
Just download the app from the Google PlayStore - and during the setup it should ask if you want to use this as the default messaging app. Just say yes :)
Then you can just replace this app into your preferred messaging 'spot' on your home screen. (I'm sure you've moved apps about before - but just in case, long press the app intil it starts to 'shimmer', and drag it etc..drag the old one away and put Handcent in it's place)
If you don't like Handcent (and it's just personal preference) you can always go back to the stock app. It'll just be sitting in your apps drawer.
Hope I've made this clear enough ;) (busy typing when I should be working LOL)

Thanks Tony. I've got loads of Handcent fonts, smileys etc etc! Bit of a minefield. Have looked at a couple but they don't seem the right ones. Shall investigate further! lol

just had a quick look on their homepage, and apparently they're updating at the moment, so temporarily not on the playstore (typical!)
if you're confident enough, you can download directly from their website - might be better to wait a little while though and get it when it's back on the playstore.
