home dog boarding and insurance

Hi, My young dog has been to someones house for 8 days while I went on holiday, he has been there 3 times before for two days stay. Their was no problem until an hour before we where due to pick him up when he chewed a hole in there leather sofa. He had never done anything like this before and I can only imagine it was because the other dog had just gone home and he was left on his own and could hear the family in the main house, (the annex is just for the dog boarders). I think attention seeking behaviour. Anyway when i first visited I asked if they where fully insured against liability and she said yes, I didn't think of damage to the property. My partner has said we would pay to get it repaired but I am starting to think that they should be insured, any advice would be grateful. She said they are licensed.
Thank you

If they are running a business from their home I imagine they should be fully insured for this kind of thing.
Your partner is sweet, but I wouldn't be paying it. I might offer the excess on proof of a policy but no more than that.
I guess what you need to weigh up is how much you value their service. Are you likely to need them again or could you find people you trust as much to do the same job?0 -
Their own insurance should cover it to be honest.
My friend does dog boarding and has insurance for those things among others PLUS just got a second hand lovely leather sofa for the dogs to lounge on as her own leather corner suite got too small - and she trully keeps all dogs with her at home with her not in a separate annexe unsupervised.0 -
If there is a separate area that the dogs are kept in (away from the family's stuff), then surely the furniture / fixings in there must be 'expendable' .... they must expect that some dogs will inevitably be stressed / upset when away from home and may well chew things (whether it's furniture, carpets, curtains etc) and I certainly wouldn't expect there to be new / hugely expensive stuff in there .... and if there is - more fool them tbh!
Their insurance should cover it - providing they do have proper cover!!Grocery Challenge £211/£455 (01/01-31/03)

Frankly I do not understand why they call it home boarding when dogs are kept separate from home and clearly unsupervised.
This is home boarding how I see it:

I had a similar question because mine was a chewer, and was told that as they'd been warned beforehand if anything happened it was their problem. It was a risk they took when they chose to accept the dog into their home.
Accidents happen, that's one of the risks of choosing to run this sort of business. All shall be well, and all shall be well, and all manner of things shall be well.
Pedant alert - it's could have, not could of.0 -

The one in a crate is my Zara (also on a lead attached to sofa LOL)- she had to be in a crate as she had a cruciate ligament surgery and had to be rested. All other dogs have the full run of the house 24/7, there is always someone at home with them, they have access to secure garden 24/7, 3 fantastic walks per day, smaller ones sleep with Ewa in her bed (yup), often they do not want to go back home and often pee themselves from happiness when Ewa collects them for repeat visit LOL Owners are not sure if to be happy or jealous
Ewa gets them sliced cow's leg for a garden party once per week too and adds boiled chicken to the food that owners drop off with their dogs.
And her rates are brilliant, way cheaper than kennels - for a REAL home stay xx
And of course she is insured0 -

Agree - that is def the sort of place I would want my dogs to go (wish I lived nearer!!) if I had to leave them BUT even the most dedicated / best place cannot be physically with / supervise the dogs 24/7
Chewing can happen overnight - when you're in the bathroom etc etc so imho they need insurance and/or to accept that *things* can get chewed / damaged etcGrocery Challenge £211/£455 (01/01-31/03)

I informed them that he would still pick up and chew little things if left about like shoes, but as I say he has never chewed any big furniture. We left it that she would get some quotes on patching the sofa up. My partner thinks she said that she would not have him again but I was so shocked I did not hear. Thanks for your reply0

Kerrydan - I can understand if she said she would not have your dog again .
But the sofa issue is down to her business insurance really.
Rising - seriously, someone is with the dogs 24/7. Ewa sleeps on the sofa in the living room when dogs are staying. She has 3 of her own and takes in up to 5 extra. Now with Zara there long term, she takes up to 4 extra.
I slept on that sofa with a giant schnauzer and Ewa's GS boy...pretty much on top of me plus a little staffie inside the hood of my sleeping bag

It really does not get better than THAT LOL0 -
