Moving to Leeds

Options
Hi all.

I am qualifying at a nurse in August. I've offered a post in Leeds to commence in mid September. This will involve me moving away from the ancestral home in Glasgow.

It is my first time away from my home town (at a ripe old age of 31). The logistics of the move are beginning to dawn on me. Would anyone have any advice of seeking rented accoodation? I'm planning to visit Leeds to have a look at properties - but given I won't be moving until August 31st - is it worth looking now? I will be flat sharing for the first six months at least until I get my settled in a new city.

Also, what is the situation around deposit protection in England? I know in Scotland there is a deposit schemes ran by local authorities.

Many thanks,

Ray

Ok, north of city (on the whole) = nice area, south of city (on the whole) = bad area.

Look at Burley wood, Kirstall, Headingly etc which have good links to the city centre and the hospitals.

Gumtree is good for finding a flat/house share but right move etc are better if you want your own place.

Looking now is probably too early, when I was looking for my own house estate agents/ letting agents wouldn't talk to me until it was 3 weeks before I was moving. Room shares may advertise earlier.
  • Definitely agree with rambosmum regarding the North/south divide. Kirkstall, Headingley & Hyde Park will have lots of house shares, but also are very studenty (but lively and vibrant) areas. I guess it depends on what you're looking for. For more 'professional house shares' maybe try Rodley, Pudsey and Bramley too. They all have great bus links to the hospital, plus Railway Stations in Pudsey and Bramley.

Where will you be working and will you need to consider public transport?

You could post your own advert on Gumtree for a room wanted.

Yes, deposits in England must be protected (unless you're a lodger). Be aware of letting agency fees for this, that and the other. HMO licencing requirements are also different to Scotland and seem to vary from council to council.

    Headlingley is studentville.

I would go for Crossgates, Roundhay, Horsforth, Oakwood and Pudsey. Crossgates, Horsforth and Pudsey have train stations which go to Leeds. Plus outside the station, you can get a free hopper bus which stops in the LGI as there is a tidy walk from the station

I spent a few years in Roundhay, its a nice area and plenty of house shares for professionals. There's no train station but plenty buses into the city centre.

All these places make me shudder. The name Gipton, you can tell its rough from the name, even you never been to Leeds.

You now know why Leeds Building Society dropped Holbeck from their name!

Another few more places to avoid
    Little London
Cross Green - I did a week's temping at a place in a small industrial estate and so glad it was just for a week.

Or there may well be a notice board in the hospital where you could both post and look for ads.

OP doesn't mention which hospital and it could be both.

LGI is easy as its city centre so anywhere with good transport links will be suitable. I wouldn't discount Bramley as it borders lots of other areas of Leeds, its not all rough and has a good rail service.

3 an hour taking less than 10 minutes. New Pudsey is on the same line, but nearer Farsley than Pudsey., it has 4 services an hour, 15 minute trip. Farsley is decent. I've commuted on rail all over Leeds and the New Pudsey Bramley line is far quieter than anything serving the north of the City.

Jimmy's would mean something to the north or north east for easier access. Lincoln Green isn't somewhere I'd want to walk around after dark.
