Hi
Has anybody got any experience with home CCTV? I'm looking to get a outdoor camera set up. What should I be looking for? I've seen some cheap, some expensive.
Ideally I'd like it to have a card slot that it records straight to, but I've also seen them that can send images to your phone.
Any help would be appreciated.

Are you planning to mount it low enough not to need a ladder to get the card out? I don't think those with easily removable cards will be waterproof - you'd need something like a Trailcam for that.
If you intend to have it indoors then the IR leds will reflect on the window at night and make it useless. During the day there will be reflections which can also spoil images.
You'll need to specify where it is going and for what purpose to get useful replies plus some idea of a budget. Do you need to be able to steer it? Zoom it?0 -
It will be mounted outside. Out of reach. So will be ladder access. And maybe 1 in the shed. Don't need to steer it zoom it.
Budget is around £100. Whats the alternative to no sd card. Does it send images to laptop. Would this require it being on 24 hrs0 -
There are wifi IP cameras, including outdoors, that need power supply only.
For most of them you can see the picture from any PC or a smartphone/tablet connected to internet. I am pretty sure you can record video to your home PC if you want.
Google for IP camera0 -
The pc would have to be on 24/7 to record.
Need to check as to what wifi connection is like where you want to place any IP camera. Can save the footage to a NAS drive or cloud storage. £100 wont get the best quality cams if you need 2. Single camera should get a decent IP camera.Mansion TV. Avoid at all cost's :j0 -
Have a look here: http://foscam.co.uk/ There's load of different types. Some record 2 sd card and some to PC. You can use an FTP server or you could use Ispy http://www.ispyconnect.com/, which is an open source CCTV system.
It all depends on your technical nous as to which option you go for. I recently setup a 3 camera system with PC providing FTP for about £350.0 -
PS, if you have a PC and only need a camera it will be less than £1000

Forget everything.
Look for Swann CCTV.
Best made ever. And very affordable.
You can watch on your iphone, tablets etc also.
Plenty of storage (1 month recording).
They always have offers in Maplin.0 -

They're not wireless though. 1 outodoor wireless camera will connect to his PC and it will cost £75. Your system will need cat 5 cable and someone with knowledge to do it.0 -
Actually some of the swann kits are IP cameras or network cameras and only require a cat 5 cable as they use poe.
Connecting a camera directly to pc to record is the worst way to go.
Easy to say get this or get that camera. But without knowing more detail, it is all moot. What size of area do you need it to cover, how much night vision do you need. ow many days of recording do you need, need it for when you go away.
Not a simple thing of just getting a camera and installing.Mansion TV. Avoid at all cost's :j0 -

I would not recommend wireless CCTV.
Cat 5 or Ethernet cable from router to the back of CCTV unit. And install the app and add user/pass (comes with the box).
It's pretty straight forward.
Way easy.
And off you go.0
