Haven't noticed the quality change yet,but do have a Branston bean mountain. Watch the can weight as they had 2 offers in B&M the other day. I think it was 3 for a £1 or 4 for £1.39 (I think can't quite remember),but the can weights were 400g and 410g respectively so check the weight before you compare. Used to be really cheap in Lidl, but prices seem to have gone up over time.

Standard six-pack price in Farmfoods is cheaper (per tin) than 'special' offer four-pack price. (£1.75 for six equivalent to £1.17 for four).

(And for me by the time I've finished adding black pepper or cayenne or ketchup or puree changes in sauce are moot.)

I wish I had stock piled, maybe it is just a blip?
I do not like sloppy sauce so I gently simmer the beans until the sauce has reduced...lovely.

    You're not alone OP.

I just opened a can this week and mentioned to OH that they looked completely different....much lighter coloured and a thin sauce. I like Branston better than any other baked bean, but these ones didn't come up to scratch at all :(
I let my mind wander and it never came back!

I noticed the sauce is more runner. I just put in saucepan and reduce sauce by bringing to boil then simmer.Stiring all the time.

Cook the beans on the hob, add a little sugar to it, 1/2 teaspoon, this should thicken it up. Maybe the sugar content is lower. The value beans are this way.
  • I thought it was just me! I buy Asda baked beans now - they are really nice - thick, not gloopy sauce, and not too much of it. They also have less sugar than other brands but don't taste like it.

Beans already contain a high amount of sugar without adding more! Branson ones contain even more than Heinz, which are amongst the highest compared to own brands.

I have noticed sauce not as thick as used to be and taste a little milder as result

For me any beans are better with a small blob of tom puree some black pepper and a little bit of butter. I wouldn't dream of adding anymore sugar to beans just wish I could take what's in there out.
