Some thieving scrote stole my carbon fibre bike from my shed this evening. We do have cover through our house insurance however we carelessly left the dam shed unlocked so I have a horrible feeling the insurer won't pay out and I'm going to be a couple of grand down

Is the bike specified on your Policy?0

Who is the policy with?
Was the bike secured to anything inside the shed?0 -
Policy is with Insure4Retirement, and no it was not secured to anything I normally just lock the shed unless we are going to be away for a few days or weeks, but tonight I was in a hurry to get out (on my crappy bike that I don't mind parking on the street) and forgot to lockup after getting that bike out.
The frame is security marked and chipped so just maybe I will get it back unless it is stripped for parts.0 -
Luckily I wont have to change my user ID because I still have my old hack bike, and my main long ride bike to keep pedalling on. If the scrote had taken my steel framed Thorn RST I would have been somewhat more upset, as they dont make them anymore and it is the most comfortable bike I have ever ridden.0

Does your policy have any requirements about the cover for the bike eg does it say cover only applies if when at the house the bike is in a locked building and / or does it say it must be locked to an immovable object?0

When my son claimed for his bike after thieves used a crowbar to prise the sides off the shed ( the padlock was still on the door) and cut through the padlocked chains attaching the bike to the shed he discovered that even if the bike had been kept in the house it needed to be secured. He had previously kept it in a walk in cupboard in the house but it wasn't secured to anything.
After the pay out his insurance insisted on expensive, high spec padlocks being used.0 -
My guess is you won't be insured - sorry, but the best thing to do would be to read the policy. Unsually it says the bike must be in a locked building or secured to something permanent (like railings).0

The policy only states that it has to be locked to something secure (with a lock weighing more that the bike) if it is away from home, there is no such stipulation what at home. I have already spoken to the insurance people and they have not indicated they wont pay out, but that I think will come down to the loss adjuster, so still keeping my fingers crossed. To be honest sheds are so easily broken into a lock provides little deterrent. When I go on holiday I move them into the house.
Had a SOC lady round this morning dusting for fingerprints. The tea-leaf had moved my steel framed bike to get at the stolen one but it seems its matt black finish is fingerprint proof as she could not even find one of mine on it.0 -
If they come to look make sure the shed is locked and and don't say otherwise unless asked the question.........0
