    Could be overheating.

Can you unscrew the back and get access to the components?

The heat exchanger on the fan may be clogged up. They usually do get clogged up after a while, but there's a point when they cannot do their job anymore.

Also, did you perform any system updates shortly before this happened? Graphics drivers, for example?

This is true, when an overheat condition is detected most processors will effectively pause what they are doing until the temperature drops to a safe level.

I don't want to bundle OP in with all the idiots out there who think "laptop" literally means it should be used on ones lap, but it's important to use them on a flat hard/even surface.

The term "laptop" originally came about as a way of marketing portable computers, it's nothing more than a buzz word and shouldn't be taken literally.

I think the 'All users' version of that screenshot would be useful, perhaps clicking on the CPU column to sort it with the highest usage at the top.

I rarely use it off the table and it's usually on one of these stands

Don't like the look of freemakeutilsservice. Suggest you uninstall Freemake Video Converter et al

Is Hijackthis still used? This will give a better program/process listing http://www.whatthetech.com/hijackthis/
and post the logfile (or link to it if its too big for posting here).
If you put your general location in your Profile, somebody here may be able to come and help you.

Quite a few "addons". Suggest you try running your normal browser without add-ons for 24 hours (sorry) and see if there's a difference.
If you put your general location in your Profile, somebody here may be able to come and help you.
  • I agree with above. You don't need Google toolbar in using Adblock as well and it's always checking for updates. I found it can hog resources. Also IE's add-ons can slow things down too.

The forum blocks posts containing certain file paths.

In particular it doesn't like the string you get by joining "c:\windows\sys" to "tem32" (I can't even post it here as one string.)

If you search and replace that text with something else, it may let you post it.

    I nearly always use Firefox.
    It doesn't have google toolbar.
