Give us a list of running processes. Disable Defender, you don't need it as well as Avast.“Learn from the mistakes of others. You can never live long enough to make them all yourself.”

When you say "everything hangs", does the mouse still move or not?
If the mouse still moves, i'd point the finger at the GFX drivers first.
If the mouse also freezes, i'd be looking at the RAM or HDD first.“I may not agree with you, but I will defend to the death your right to make an a** of yourself.”

Could be overheating.
Can you unscrew the back and get access to the components?
The heat exchanger on the fan may be clogged up. They usually do get clogged up after a while, but there's a point when they cannot do their job anymore.
Also, did you perform any system updates shortly before this happened? Graphics drivers, for example?0 -
How? Copy and paste from task manager or ... ?pendragon_arther wrote: »Give us a list of running processes. Disable Defender, you don't need it as well as Avast.

I did clean out the fan a few months ago - there was nothing much in there.ptrichardson wrote: »Could be overheating.

Only windows updates (scary stuff, just typing this and the 'Win Update' logo pops up!!!)ptrichardson wrote: »Also, did you perform any system updates shortly before this happened? Graphics drivers, for example?0 -

That's good.
But could still be overheating - just not caused by the most usual thing.
Install HWMonitor - it tells you your temps. Do normal things that would cause it to break and see what the temps reach and post here once you break it.0 -

Can you post a screen shot?
Type into Run msconfig and go to startup and uncheck Defender. To disable without rebooting disable in Task manager.“Learn from the mistakes of others. You can never live long enough to make them all yourself.”

Remove the battery and charger/ac adapter/power cord from your laptop, press and hold the power button for 20 seconds to discharge any residual current inside the laptop. This clears your RAM and is like a hardware reset. Replace the battery and charger/ac adapter/power cord and turn your laptop on.0

This is on my user settings, when I tick 'all users', I get loads more, but the other users are not logged on (and rarely are)pendragon_arther wrote: »Can you post a screen shot?.
It's not there in msconfig - *only* avast!pendragon_arther wrote: »Type into Run msconfig and go to startup and uncheck Defender. To disable without rebooting disable in Task manager.0 -
I think the 'All users' version of that screenshot would be useful, perhaps clicking on the CPU column to sort it with the highest usage at the top.
The 'user' in question may not be a real human being, but a user account used by the system - if there's a process hogging your CPU it may belong to a system account and therefore not shown in the screenshot linked above.0
