If its point and press of family consider a Used Fuji x10 or x20. Compact, but high end sensor.

An SLR is a completely different kind of beast for a completely different kind of purpose..

For day to day use, they are too bulky and the need to carry extra lenses to get a decent range rules them out for all but serious and specialist users.

The top end models of the Panasonic Lumix range have a huge advantage over most compact cameras in that they have viewfinders. Whatever manufacturers and over-enthusiastic reviewers like to pretend, rear screen LCDs are useless in bright sunlight.

I'm a long standing user of SLRs but always take a compact with me for casual use. I've just bought a TZ60 (still available) and have to say it is everything I hoped it would be. Shop around and you will get one at a good price. It's the best pocket camera I've had so far - and I've had a lot of them.

    Why don't you get DSLR.
    It's better.

And you would never go wrong with Canons.
Compact Canons have a habit of their lens covers sticking/breaking. An SLR is absolutely pointless for the OP's needs.

The first gen Sony RX-100 is a good shout, it's meant to be great and would only cost £250 after the cashback offer. If you wanted to buy if from a shop, John Lewis have it and it's only £10 more.

Agree on Sony, they are just so far ahead of the old firms these days.
When you look at what they output and the features, the old firms have really let the grass grow under their feet.
I do Contracts, all day every day.

Too much hassle for a "point and shoot"

If you tell us what your old Lumix was then it'll be easier to suggest a reasonably similar replacement. I'm still using my 9 year old DMC-FX33 and I keep thinking about replacing it but just works so well that I can't be bothered.

The best camera is the one thats right for you as an individual.

.....and the one that you actually have with you

I recently sold £1,500 worth of DSLR kit and bought a point and shoot

Have a look at the Panasonic SZ8 or SZ10.

I've just bought a Lumix DMC100 and I love it, if the cheaper versions are a fraction as good they're worth the money.

Also have a look at the Canon G16 they are now under £300, when released they were a lot more. I have the older G9 and it's a superb camera.

It can be use as a point and shoot or you can manually change the settings if so inclined.
One by one the penguins are slowly stealing my sanity.
