Hi,
Can someone help? I'm looking to replace my old Lumix (Dropped it!)
I've had some chats with Jessops, Currys etc and they have suggested the Lumix DMC-TZ70
Is this A, a camera that's "right" for me or B, even worth it?
I use my camera to take "family" shots - Kids on a walk out somewhere or if we go on vacation. I am a "point and shoot" kinda gal. Do I really need all the features that they are trying to flog me? Yes it would be nice to have something that balances so my pictures aren't blurred, but I have no idea about editing pics etc!
Any recommendations / advice?!
Thanks in advance

My advise with compact camera's is always make sure the fixed lens is a fast one, the faster the lens the clearer the image and the less often you'll need the flash. What really ruins a good photo is using the flash when you don't really need to, it washes out the images, makes people look like ghosts and causes red-eye. Generally the bigger the lense diameter, the better it'll perform in low light (but not always).
In a shop, do a little test..... Focus on an object (half press) and with the flash turned off, turn slowly as you fully press the shutter. You want no/least blur with the best image quality. In shop is a good test, if it can handle false light, then it should be great.
Forget about megapixels, more just means you'll need more storage space, it's something the marketing folk focus on, but actually means very little in terms of quality. A 6.8megapixel DSLR will produce vastly better images than a 24megapixel compact.“I may not agree with you, but I will defend to the death your right to make an a** of yourself.”

I'd be pushing you towards the 'super compacts' - with fast lenses and bigger sensors.. not super zooms like the one you've been recommended.
Something like the Canon PowerShot S120 - http://www.amazon.co.uk/Canon-PowerShot-S120-Camera-12-1MP-black/dp/B00EPFEATS
That'll be nice and fast for capturing those moments that happen quickly. It reviews well, and has some interesting gizmos (GPS, Wifi, Touchscreen).
The problem with this type is that they don't have big zoom. Honestly, the only time I miss bigger zoom is sports days and school plays.
Personally, if i had the budget i'd be going for a Panasonic LX100 (I have a Panasonic LX7 now and still love it after 2 years)0 -
Are you asking because the advised camera costs more than you planned to spend?. If you were happy with your old Lumix replace it with the current equivalent. Cheaper Panasonics have Mega OIS which helps prevent blurred pictures.0

Thanks for the replies - I'll try the test!
No I have around £300 to spend on a camera but *cough* [Strike]I'm tight [/STRIKE]*cough*
I don't really think I need half the gizmo's they were talking about so thought I would ask in here0 -
Sony RX-100

Why don't you get DSLR.
It's better.
And you would never go wrong with Canons.0 -
I've had various Lumix over the years & I love my TZ 60. I'm always using the big zoom & having a viewfinder (at last) is great.
I can't be doing with carrying around a DSLR & all the bits, the TZ60 just sits in a pouch on my belt.Tall, dark & handsome. Well two out of three ain't bad.0 -
If you tell us what your old Lumix was then it'll be easier to suggest a reasonably similar replacement. I'm still using my 9 year old DMC-FX33 and I keep thinking about replacing it but just works so well that I can't be bothered.0
