Hi you don't receive free prescriptions unless you are on benefits. However if you go into your chemist and ask for a HC1 form they will means test you. The NHS can either give you full help or partial help. It takes 6 weeks for the NHS to get back to you. Hope this helps.

also if you go onto glasses direct they are very cheap and good i have had 3 pairs of glasses and 1 pair of sunglasses, they also take nhs vouchers if u send them in. my 1st pair i paid only postage because of this. glasses stat from about 30 pound but they also have designer ones. also u can go through greasypalm with them. x

  • In Scotland tests and presescriptions are free. Don't know about the rest of the uk.

People have mentioned the HC1 form. You fill this out and they send you back a HC2 form. My parents earn over the thresholds things but I still have managed to get it for the past two years. They ask for things like your past 4 pay cheques, so I'm not sure I'll be able to get it this year as I'm earning more this summer than I have before.

But its pretty useful, especially for prescriptions. The money you get off glasses depends on the voucher the optician gives you depending on your perscription. There are A, B and C vouchers with C giving you the most off the lenses etc.

Try https://www.goggles4u.com - they're about £14 for all frames with standard lenses (increasing in price depending on the lenses you pick).

5% cashback via Quidco too, which tracks in pounds what you pay in dollars so is really 10%.

Actually, this is a misleading statement. The HC1 is means-tested as stated above, so it does not necessarily give you free prescriptions, eye tests or dentist treatment. Once you fill it in and send it off, your income will be assessed and they will send you a certificate stating the maximum you will have to pay towards any given treatment. This could be 0, but it is income-contingent.

    For anyone!!!!!!!
Get your prescription and then go on to one of the cheap glasses websites.
I have used a couple but like glasses direct ( just personal preference)
There are quite a few listed on mse if you search cheap glasses.

Again this might be misleading because i'm talking about the scottish situation but in terms of dentist fees I think they'd normally start charging at 18 (maybe below if you weren't still at school) but it was extended to 19 when you were at uni (I had to fill in a form) I'd imagine there should be an NHS site that will tell you the exact situation where you are.
