Reasonable cost for decorating?

Basic 2 bed Victorian Terrace in central London, a Dulux Select decorator has quoted the following... does this sound a reasonable cost for decorating work (all walls and ceiling newly plastered)?

Main Bedroom (4.5m x 3.5m)

• Sheet floors, mask sockets and light switches
• Rub down all walls, ceilings and woodwork including skirting boards, doors and frame
• Fill walls, ceilings and woodwork where necessary and rub down
• Using decorators caulk mastic where necessary
• Apply Dulux to ceiling x 1 coat
• Apply Dulux to walls x 2 coats
• Apply Dulux undercoat to all woodwork x 1 coat
• Apply Dulux eggshell/satinwood to woodwork x 1 coat
• Leave site clean and tidy

Labour and materials £470+VAT

Wood Floor to Main Bedroom

• Rub down all boards
• Fill with two-pack resin filler where necessary and rub down
• Apply Farrow and Ball floor paint x 2 coats
• Leave site clean and tidy

Labour and materials £300+VAT

There's 3 other rooms of similar size and a hallway/landing too all priced at similar costs.

Thanks.

No mention of mist coating concerns me?

And I don't believe for one minute that any paint will cover new plaster in one coat. Or for that matter, if it were existing to freshen it up, I'd still want two coats.

Our walls and ceilings have been prepared by the builders who did the plastering with a PVA/water mixed base with a a white undercoat on top. Woodwork has been sanded and primed.

Decorators job will be starting from this point.

Sounds about right to me. Have they come recommended?

No, unfortunately i'm new to the area and don't have any leads for recommendations. I met with and had quotes in from about 4-5 decorators from the Dulux Select scheme

Figured that would at least be better than a random pluck out the yellow pages.

If i go with this chap (which i may well do if his costs sound okay for London) then he's given me references and a couple of live sites i can visit to see work.

You post the specifics of your job, and essentially put it out to tender. Tradesmen will get in touch, and you can get several quotes from various people. You'll also be able to see other people's reviews of them. Many tradesmen on it rely on recommendations, so they're out to get the best reviews possible. Win win :)

There was no need to PVA, should have just been mist coated.

Costings sound about right, I hope that where they refer to the use of filler on the floor they mean on boards themselves oppose to any gaps between boards?

Any friends/family members in the area perhaps? Usually recommendations is a good starting point, then do some research on the company etc online

It's good to get quotes from 2-3 different people usually to see average costs

Sorry, not psychic. And why on earth have the builders used PVA? That's a no no
  • It's very reasonable. Most British decorators work on a roughly (depending on area) daily charge of £80 - £90, whereas East Europeans are generally cheaper.
