its a barebones system so you get the case with motherboard fitted.

Isn't the warranty void when you open the case though?

No. That was tested in court quite a few years ago and found to be unenforcable as a PC is designed to be upgraded.

    What's better? Intel or AMD?

    My current computer is AMD.

Intel Core 2 Duo at the moment.

    Video Cards
    256 MB ATI® Radeon® X1300 PCI Express graphics card

If you're not doing gaming, the onboard will suffice. If you're getting this graphics card, make sure it's not one that uses "Hypermemory" as it doesn't actually have 256MB but pinches it from system RAM.

This Antec Sonata II case with 450W PSU would be a much better alternative for the same price. G

I've got the Sonata II, it's a lovely case, I like how easy it is to add harddisks.

Pictures of my setup at the like below, it's a Core 2 duo E6600 with 2Gb memory and a 7600GS video card. I use mainly for video editing and watching divx and mpeg2 into BBCHD.

Intel Core 2's are the chips to go for at the moment, the E6600 is a popular choice.

I don't want to buy from Dell would prefer to built it myself. I like know what's in my computer, and if I want to upgrade bits I won't get stuck.

This looks like a good start?

Oops, just realised the Asus 'barebones' (case+PSU+motherboard) you linked to cannot be compared to the Antec Sonata (case+PSU only). Hence, your barebones choice represents very good value for money - whether AMD AM2/Intel C2D (see below for Intel equivalent).

No point getting an Intel C2D for your usage & budget, unless it's one of the low-end ones like the E2140/2160 (£44-55) - nothing more. Btw, the Asus V3-P5V900 (£68) is the Intel/C2D barebones equivalent. G

Get yourself onto ebuyer.co.uk or Aria.co.uk and price up a system, you can build one to your exact specs for silly money, they also have barebones systems.
I would personally avoid Dell at all costs, they are built to a budget (fairly obvious considering the price) and build quality is not exactly great.

I have a dell and have also purchased them for my parents and my extended family...

Never once had a problem (touch wood) so I disagree - btw have you ever owned a Dell?
