in Water bills
We have a loo which was pouring water straight through for about a week before we got it fixed - how much extra water could it have lost do you think?

Lots - unless you read your meter regularly you won't know.
Time how long it takes your cistern to fill and work out it's fill rate (a 10 litre cistern taking 5 minutes will use about 2lpm
.
There are 1440 minutes in a day = 2880 litres a day, 1000 litres in a cu.m = 2.8 cu/m a day. Over 7 days that's about 20 cu.m
Some toilets are a bit slower to fill, some are faster. Mine fills very quickly. (6 litre cistern takes 70 secs = 5lpm = 7200l/day = 7.2cum (My water charge is about £3 cu.m water+sewerage (Anglian Water) = about £22 a DAY if I let it leak (over £150 for a week)
Ideally you need an isolation valve in the feed to the cistern so you can turn it off in the case of leaks and make it easier to service.Never under estimate the power of stupid people in large numbers0 -
Read your meter and work out out.
Even a small leak uses a surprising amount if left. Been there!0 -
Could you not have isolated the supply or tied up the ballcock until you could get it fixed? No free lunch, and no free laptop0
